Mr Philip Dobson is a fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Newcastle upon Tyne, with specialist expertise in hip and knee conditions, robotic-assisted joint replacement, knee reconstruction and sports-related injuries.
He graduated from Newcastle Medical School and completed his higher surgical training in orthopaedics in the North East of England. Following this, he undertook two years of international fellowship training in Australia, specialising in knee, hip and sports injury surgery at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, and major trauma surgery at John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales.
Alongside his clinical training, Mr Dobson completed a PhD at Newcastle University, investigating the effects of ageing and mitochondrial dysfunction on bone biology — research that has been published and recognised with awards for its contribution to musculoskeletal science.
He was appointed Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he treats both trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions, and serves as orthopaedic lead for surgical skills training.
Mr Dobson’s clinical practice encompasses the following:
He combines advanced surgical expertise with a patient-centred, evidence-based approach, tailoring treatment plans to each individual’s goals — whether that’s returning to sport, relieving chronic pain, or improving everyday mobility.

My consultant was very relatable. Very professional. Empathic. Concerned to get the best outcome for his patient. I am pleased I chose this particular consultant. All receptionists and other personnel were friendly and helpful. I felt much at ease throughout the entire visit.
Mr Dobson was prepared for my visit. He examined my wound and made helpful suggestions as to how I could manage the wound.
Really professional but with a personal touch. Easy to talk to he made my whole experience 5 star
Mr Dobson was very clear around the issues with my knee amd what the next steps would look like. He was polite and engaging and I'm now very happy ro be getting treatment for an ongoing issue.
Thorough in talking through the options and showing and explaining the images.
I couldn’t recommend Mr Dobson more. The job he has done on my knee is first class. To be able to walk with no pain at all 3 weeks after surgery is a testament to how good he is at his job.
Very friendly and helpful staff. My appointment with Mr Dobson was very informative and I felt eveything was covered and I was put at ease. The nurse who carried out the pre assessment was friendly and very efficient
Very helpful and explained everything so well

Thank you for your kind review. Let me know if you need anything.
All went very well. Highly professional consulta t and all staff. My only criticism was the wait in pre op assessment but staff explained they never know who will attend.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. The request for review that was sent to you comes from me personally and not Nuffield hospital. The review should ideally focus on your consultation and not other aspects of Nuffield hospital such as wait times in pre-assessment which I have no control of. I am however sorry that the wait time in pre-assessment was unacceptable and that this has led to you providing a less than 5 star review for me. I hope you were happy with your consultation and look forward to seeing you again for surgery.
Very professional and a highly skilled knee surgeon.
