Dr Paul Averley

Dr Paul Averley is a highly accomplished Dentist who is dedicated to providing outstanding, compassionate dental care. With a career focused on innovating and delivering high-quality primary care services, he has established himself as a leading figure in the field of dentistry. Dr Averley is particularly renowned for his pioneering work in conscious sedation and implant dentistry, helping to make dental treatments more accessible and comfortable for anxious patients.

Dr Averley qualified from Newcastle University's School of Dental Sciences in 1990. Committed to advancing his clinical skills, he completed extended training in conscious sedation at Newcastle University in 1995, followed by a diploma in the same field in 1997. In the same year, he obtained the Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons' Faculty of General Dental Practitioners. Dr Averley's dedication to research led him to achieve a Master of Philosophy in 2003 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2005 from Newcastle University. He further expanded his expertise by completing a Master of Science in implant dentistry at the University of Warwick Medical School in 2008.

Throughout his career, Dr Averley has made significant contributions to the wider dental profession. He has served as a Visiting Academic, contributing regularly to postgraduate training in conscious sedation, and has worked as a Regional Tutor in implant dentistry. His research in paediatric conscious sedation has been instrumental in shaping national clinical standards. Dr Averley has collaborated with the Standing Dental Advisory Committee on Conscious Sedation to produce national guidelines, and has worked with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to develop guidelines for paediatric sedation. He has also been actively involved with the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD), serving on its editorial board and working groups.
