Mr Mrinal Rana is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Cornea Specialist consulting in London and Coventry, with over 20 years of experience across the NHS and private practice.
He specialises in keratoconus and corneal cross-linking, corneal ectasia, corneal transplantation and corneal disease, complex and refractive cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, and dry eye and ocular surface disease. As a lead consultant at a major tertiary NHS trust, he is awarded FRCOphth by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and is recognised for his thoughtful, unhurried consultations and honest, patient-centred approach.
Mr Rana has extensive expertise in managing complex cataract cases, including patients with corneal scarring (congenital or infectious), corneal decompensation caused by inherited corneal dystrophies, and high refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. He also has significant experience treating patients who are unable to lie flat because of spinal or respiratory conditions, as well as individuals with learning disabilities or dementia, following the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Best Interests Care pathway. Within the NHS he has led the redesign of this pathway and introduced Bilateral Simultaneous Cataract Surgery (BSCS) — an advanced approach offered by only a small number of centres worldwide — which he is now working to make available in private practice.
He earned his MBBS from Kuvempu University, India, before relocating to the UK in 2003. He completed his ophthalmic training at leading centres in Leicester, Liverpool and Birmingham, gaining both MRCOphth and FRCOphth qualifications from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He subsequently completed two corneal fellowships in Birmingham and Cambridge over three years, developing advanced expertise in corneal and external eye disease, and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Refractive Cataract Surgery from Ulster University, Northern Ireland.
Having cared for patients from a wide range of backgrounds across the UK, Mr Rana understands the importance of care tailored to each individual. He is fluent in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi, enabling him to communicate with patients in their preferred language and helping them feel informed and at ease throughout their treatment.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Rana is actively involved in research and education. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented at national and international conferences. He chairs a national cadaveric ophthalmic anaesthesia course, lectures in the UK and overseas, and is dedicated to teaching the next generation of ophthalmologists.
He is equally committed to global eye health, having volunteered with the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia, providing free cataract and corneal surgery to underserved communities through outreach clinics and village eye camps. During the COVID-19 pandemic he volunteered to support NHS teams caring for patients affected by the virus.
Outside medicine, Mr Rana values a healthy work–life balance. He enjoys time with his children, racquet sports, yoga and meditation, travel, and musicals, and is currently learning salsa and French.
