    About

Mr Subhamoy Chatterjee is a Consultant spinal surgeon who practices in both Central London and the North London areas. Affectionately know as 'Bob' to his colleagues, he trained at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital. He undertook his initial surgical training in Oxford and finally on the Middlesex rotation in London. He went on to gain and complete a Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship at Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals as well as Neurosurgical Spinal Fellowship at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. This dual training allowed him to develop and hone the latest techniques in spinal surgery.

He has always held a high regard for the importance of research and in 2003 achieved a distinction in his Master’s Degree at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, where he researched Biomechanics and Skeletal Tissue Degeneration. He maintains this within his current practice sitting on research committees and holds honorary research contracts at the Royal National Orthoapedic Hospital & Norfolk & Norwich Hospitals.

Mr Chatterjee is very committed to education and his research is widely published and presented. He lectures and teaches internationally and is a tutor in minimally invasive keyhole surgery. He is the author of numerous book chapters, articles and research papers, as well as the Consultant editor of several medical journals. Mr Chatterjee resides on several medical committees and is a spinal advisor to the NHS.

Throughout his practice he strongly believes in ensuring that his patients understand their conditions to help make an informed decision about their health.

His wife Lisa is also a trained Orthopaedic surgeon. Bob has varied interests outside of his practice, from fine food and wine to table tennis, but now it his two young daughters with whom he likes to spend his free time.

This has to rate as my most pleasurable, knowledgeable meeting with a consultant. Bob put me at ease completely with his excellent and calm approach. He listened to my story first in great detail. He had studied my MRI report in detail beforehand. The examination was carried out very diligently. He then sat me down and went through the MRI report and showed me the scan images and explained what the report had suggested and the differences with my symptoms. He gave me great confidence on how to move forward from here and really encouraged me to get back to what I really enjoyed doing. He is all for as much a conservative approach as necessary with surgery being the last option. Highly recommend.

Utterly clear about everything and his explanation of what he planned to do was faultless. The procedure itself was apparently 50-50 but he pulled it off. So couldn't have been a better experience

Bob has operated on me today, administering an injection to treat a prolapsed disc. I met him last week initially so he could examine me and an MRI was conducted. I then returned to the hospital for the procedure. Bob has been sympathetic to my situation and very clear in his explanations of both the problem and the treatment. He also instilled in me a great deal of confidence that I was in safe hands and that he could treat my condition. As I write this, I am back at home, feeling a great deal better than I could possibly imagine that when I met him just 5 days ago. I have no hesitation in recommending Bob very highly.

I can thoroughly recommend Mr. Chatterjee on all levels. The care I had from him and his team was first class in terms of the treatment given as well as the friendly and informative service. At all times I felt fully informed of what was happening and everything was explained to me in layman's terms, which together with a singularly good bedside manner, made me feel secure and confident to go ahead with worrying operation. The outcome has been fantastic and I feel like a new man.

I had a very positive experience during my treatment process. from the initial consultation things were explained clearly and options provided. when it came to surgery i had good confidence it would be successful as things were explained and information given on how often this was done and success rates. the actual surgery went well various people in the team were helpful and thoughtful. Bob rang me in the evening to give me his initial thoughts on how the operation went. this was appreciated rather than waiting for the next day. Follow up contact was excellent too.

I had a 2 level cervical disc replacement with Mr Chatterjee on 31st July 2018 at the hospital of St John & St Elizabeth in London. He is undoubtedly the best spinal surgeon I have ever met, honest, thorough opinion, great respect and a massive thank you to him. His advise was "spot on", all my symptoms were resolved immediately following the surgery. The Best... thank you.... great respect!

I have never felt so much health buzzing in my body as I feel now after my operation. You have made me a new person and I am so grateful for that. I have always been an assertive person but that pain for over two years made me feel as I was losing it. I thank you so much for restoring my confidence. May your good work continue to shine on everybody your hands touch.

Your advice that an operation will not be a good thing for me at the moment was music to my ears, as I love leading a holistic, natural life. You are one of the most incredible people I have ever met in my life... It was an honour to meet you.

I would like to thank you for your excellent professional care and help which you showed me at the Highgate Hospital on Friday evening. I really appreciated your assistance and reassurance about my condition. I am walking with confidence and no stick around my flat in the knowledge that at last, I have been appropriately diagnosed. Thank you again.
