Jon McFarlane is a Consultant Urological Surgeon working in Bath, with a specialist interest in prostate cancer and other prostate diseases. He aims to offer a rapid, individualised, personal service to all his patients to try and diagnose and resolve problems quickly with as little stress as possible. He is a member of the Bath Urology Group - working as a team allows immediate cross referral if a different Urology sub-specialty expertise is required, along with guaranteed Consultant cover for any urgent clinical issues that arise during periods of absence.
Since his consultant appointment in 2002, Jon has worked to develop and improve urological services in Bath, and introduced many new services and techniques, including both laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, prostate brachytherapy, HIFU and transperineal template biopsy. He has held a number of senior NHS posts, including 4 years as Head of the Surgical Division, and is currently the RUH Associate Medical Director for Cancer Services. He was a National Clinical Advisor to NHS Improvement for prostate cancer services from 2010-14, and a member of the Prostate Cancer Advisory Group from 2011-2018.
He trained in preclinical medicine at Oxford University (1985-88), before moving to Cambridge University for clinical training at Addenbrookes Hospital (1988-91). His early surgical training was undertaken in Cambridge and London, where he received the Master of Surgery higher degree after a period of clinical research. He then moved to Oxford for specialist training in Urology, and spent a year in Melbourne on a Urology Fellowship with an interest in prostate cancer. On return to the UK, he took the final specialist FRCS(Urol) examination in 2002, where he was awarded the Keith Yeates gold medal as the best candidate that year. The award came with a travelling fellowship bursary which he used to further train in prostate cancer surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York prior to taking up his Consultant appointment.

Dr McFarlane is a very knowledgeable and pleasant doctor
The appointment for my examination was well organised and went through very promptly. The review and explanation was very clear and precise and his offer of his continued further availability , if required, was much appreciated.
Mr McFarlane was very clear and explained what was happening very clearly and put me at ease. To be honest both He and his secretary Michelle went out of their way to accommodate and work around other commitments I had …… thank you both and the imaging team at the Bath Clinic.
Jon has an effortless patience and professionalism which can make even the most complex “plumbing” issues easy to understand. Reassuring and highly approachable.
Mr McFarlane met me very promptly and gave me a very detailed and clear explanation of my symptoms, possible risks and treatment options. He made straightforward suggestions and arranged for immediate quotations for the likely cost of diagnostic and treatment options. He posted a detailed letter summarizing our meeting immediately. I can thoroughly recommend him!
This has been an excellent interaction with easy channels of communication maintained. The information and advice has been clearly articulated and I shall recommend Mr McFarlane to friends and family.
Very good, seen on time. Professional manner. Easy parking too.
My recent visit was quite brief. I received good news on the result of a biopsy, and the site of a recent operation was checked and found to be healing well.
My follow-up consultation went perfectly. I described some of the symptoms I had experienced following my operation, and how pleased I was with progress so far. Mr McFarlane explained clearly what might happen during the next 6 months, and also that the tests on my tissue eliminated any doubts I might have had about cancer. He made it very clear that I could contact him (or my GP) if there were any changes to my progress. I left the Bath Clinic feeling very reassured that I had been in safe hands throughout.
Jon could not have been more professional and helpful regarding my condition throughout my consultations. He used his obvious wealth of experience in his specialty to explain the detail of my problem in an empathetic but not patronising manner, and understood and accepted the basis upon which I decided to go forward. I would not hesitate to recommend Jonathan McFarlane.
