About

Mr Philip Stott is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive hip surgery, sports injuries and trauma surgery based in Hove. He currently sees patients at Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre and private patients at Spire Montefiore Hospital in Hove.

Mr Stott completed his medical degree at the University of London in 1996, followed by his basic surgical training in Brighton. He later completed his DPhil in Biomechanical Engineering at the University of Sussex in 2006. He underwent his specialist training in orthopaedic surgery on the St George's Hospital Orthopaedic Rotation. During his training, he developed an interest in hip injuries and conditions. This was followed by a trauma and hip surgery fellowship in New Zealand and a hip surgery fellowship at St George's Hospital in 2008.

In his current clinical practice, Mr Stott exclusively treats conditions of the hip and pelvis in patients of all ages and patients referred both nationally and internationally. He has specialist expertise in minimally invasive techniques to treat hip and pelvis injuries and conditions, this include: hip replacement, pelvic fracture fixation, joint replacement, hip labral tears and cartilage damage. Mr Stott is the only surgeon in East Sussex who repairs hip labral tears with arthroscopic surgery. He uses modern and highly recognised techniques and regularly attends conferences to ensure he is using the best treatments for his patients.

Unfortunately I suffered a trochanteric fracture during surgery which prevents me from allocating the highest score. However I hold Mr Stott in the highest regard. His care and attention was superlative and the hip prosthesis has given me a pain free and now fully mobile hip. I am strengthening and mobilising at a very reasonable pace.

Explanation

Although he concluded that I do not need hip surgery, Mr Stott was extremely helpful in commissioning X-rays on my hips and knees and, having studied them, explaining to me what the problems are and advising me as to how I should approach my stiffness problem which, as he showed me on the X-rays, is caused by arthritis in all those joints - some worse than others. He took a lot of trouble to explain the X-rays and recommended Pilates which I am now organising. I had been recommend to visit Mr Stott by a friend who has had two very successful hip replacement operations by him, as a result of which she has now excellent mobility (and very neat scars!) I was of course relieved that I do not need surgery, but would certainly return to Mr Stott should any further problems develop. Incidentally, the staff at Montifiore hospital were very efficient, speedy and friendly. Lady Jennie B.

Mr Stott carried a thorough examination of my left hip, including arranging an x-ray. His assessment of the examination and x-ray was clearly explained to me, and I was shown relevant areas of the x-rayed hip joint that were causing me difficulty. I would be very happy to undertake further treatment with Mr Stott.
