Mr Peter Chong

Mr Peter Chong is a highly experienced Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, with specialist expertise in general surgery, colorectal surgery and surgical oncology. His surgical oncology interests include colorectal cancer, sarcoma and neuroendocrine tumours. He also has extensive experience in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant soft tissue conditions, including lipomas and sarcomas.

What can Mr Chong help with? You may wish to see him if you have:

Blood in your stool or bleeding from the back passage - Rectal bleeding can have many causes, including haemorrhoids, fissures, polyps and bowel conditions. Mr Chong can assess the cause and, where appropriate, arrange a colonoscopy or other investigation.

A change in your bowel habit - If you have recently developed persistent constipation, diarrhoea, a change in the frequency or appearance of your stools, or a change in your normal bowel pattern, an assessment with Mr Chong may well be appropriate.

Pain, bleeding or a lump around the anus - symptoms such as painful bowel movements, bleeding, itching, swelling or a persistent lump may be caused by haemorrhoids, an anal fissure or fistula. Mr Chong can diagnose the cause and discuss appropriate treatment.

A positive bowel cancer screening test - If you have received an abnormal or positive bowel screening result this will rightly be of concern for you and Mr Chong can quickly provide specialist assessment and colonoscopy where appropriate.

A bowel polyp or abnormality that needs further assessment - Mr Chong is an experienced endoscopist and can perform colonoscopy and advanced endoscopic removal of large colonic polyps where appropriate.

Abdominal pain or suspected gallstones - Mr Chong can assess abdominal pain that may be related to gallstones or other gastrointestinal problems and advise whether further investigation such as an upper GI endoscopy or gallbladder surgery is appropriate.

A lump or swelling - Mr Chong's specialist practice in soft tissue tumours makes him expertly suited to help you if you have discovered a new lump or swelling in the abdomen or elsewhere under the skin. This may be lipoma, sebaceous cyst or another type of soft tissue mass, or it might be a painful, infected toenail. He will examine the lump or swelling, arrange investigations if needed and discuss whether it should be removed.

A hernia - If you have noticed a lump or bulge in the groin, abdomen or around a previous operation, particularly if it causes pain or discomfort, Mr Chong can assess you and discuss what treatment options are available.

Investigations and treatments. Depending on your symptoms, Mr Chong can provide or arrange:

• Upper GI endoscopy
• Treatment for haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas including flexible sigmoidoscopy and rectal examination under anaesthetic
• Laparoscopic gallbladder removal
• Open inguinal hernia repair and other types of hernia repair such as umbilical and epigastric hernias
• Assessment and removal of skin and soft tissue lumps and masses including lipomas, sebaceous cysts and painful, infected toenails.

Mr Chong's professional background: he trained in surgery in Glasgow and Edinburgh and was awarded a prestigious travelling fellowship to the Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He has published research relating to colorectal surgery, gallbladder surgery, haemorrhoids, anal fissures and hernia surgery.
