Mr Michael Silva is a Consultant Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic (HPB) and General Surgeon with more than three decades of surgical experience. He was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2009 and is currently Clinical Lead for HPB Surgery in Oxford. His practice covers the full spectrum of benign and malignant disease affecting the gallbladder, bile ducts, liver and pancreas, with particular expertise in complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
A major focus of Mr Silva’s clinical work is gallstone and gallbladder disease, including laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, alongside the management of benign and malignant biliary conditions. He also treats patients with primary and secondary liver tumours, pancreatic cystic lesions, acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and abdominal neuroendocrine tumours. His surgical practice includes both open and minimally invasive techniques, and he is recognised as one of the pioneers of robotic HPB surgery in Oxford.
Mr Silva has a specialist interest in the management and reconstruction of bile duct injuries following previous surgery, as well as complex pancreatic surgery. He is the Oxford lead for the national total pancreatectomy and islet auto-transplantation (TPIAT) programme, which offers this advanced treatment to carefully selected patients with severe chronic pancreatitis.
His current professional roles are closely integrated with both NHS and private practice. Alongside his leadership position at Oxford University Hospitals, he provides private consultations and surgery at Nuffield Health The Manor Hospital, Oxford, where his listed consultation session is Tuesday morning. Bupa also lists him as a Platinum, Fee-Assured Consultant, with face-to-face, video and telephone consultations available.
Mr Silva undertook higher surgical training in the West Midlands Deanery, with extended specialist training in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the Liver Unit, University Hospital Birmingham, one of the UK’s major HPB and transplant centres. During this period, he completed an MD at the University of Birmingham investigating ischaemia-reperfusion injury to the liver during surgery and transplantation. Mr Silva’s practice combines high-volume specialist HPB surgery, multidisciplinary cancer care and advanced minimally invasive techniques. He manages patients across the complete pathway from diagnosis and treatment planning through complex surgery and postoperative follow-up, with particular expertise in patients requiring specialist treatment for gallbladder, liver, bile duct and pancreatic disease.
