About Mr Marcel Ivanov

Mr Marcel Ivanov MD, PhD, MSc, FRCS is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon whose main NHS practice is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. He is Spinal Lead at the Department of Neurosurgery and Audit Lead for Neurosciences and Director of AO SPINE Centre Sheffield. In 2017-2019 he served as AO SPINE UK Council Officer (Neurosurgery) and since 2019 he is Chair of AO SPINE UK & Ireland.

He qualified as a doctor in 1999 and as a Neurosurgeon in 2007 with his comprehensive neurosurgical training initially in Iasi, Romania and post CCT Fellowship training in the UK. He was awarded Neurosurgery International Fellowship training at the UIHC, Iowa, USA (2004), received AOSPINE-EANS Spinal Fellowship training in Leeds, UK (2008) and Neuro-Oncology Fellowship training at the Walton Centre, Liverpool, UK (2009). He further supplemented his training with a period as Visiting Fellow in several major neurosurgical centers around the world (USA, Germany, Finland, Belgium, Japan).

He developed an interest in spinal pathology with focus on minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques and special interest in the treatment of spinal cord tumors.

Mr Ivanov is passionate about teaching; he lectures, demonstrates as well as chairs numerous neurosurgical events nationally and internationally. He is a member of the UK National Neurosurgery Selection Board and Member of International Neurosurgical Examination Boar for EANS and AO Spine. He is a passionate faculty and is frequently invited to teach on international courses. He is the UK representative at the EANS Training Courses.

He thinks that high quality neurosurgical education stays at the origin of professional development of each neurosurgeon. Mr Ivanov has more than 160 presentations and publications on prestigious international neurosurgical meetings, journals, books.

Mr Ivanov plays an active role within European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, AO SPINE and EUROSPINE. He was member of the EANS IM Committee Member (2012-2018) and was elected Chair of the EANS International Relationships Committee for two consecutive terms (2017-2021). Since 2021 he is member of the EANS Board (Historian), Spine Section Committee and founding Member of the EANS Task Force on Emerging Technologies and Innovations.

Since 2019 Mr Ivanov is Expert Panel Member on Medical Devices and for European Commission.

Mr Ivanov dedicates a lot of his time to editorial work. He is active reviewer for a number of journals: World Neurosurgery; Acta Neurochirurgica; Spine; British Medical Journal (BMJ); British Journal of Neurosurgery; Romanian Neurosurgery; International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery.

He is a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons from England and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Sheffield University.
