About Professor James Tysome

Prof Tysome was appointed as a Consultant ENT surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals in 2012 and is an Affiliated Professor at the University of Cambridge. He specialises in hearing and balance and sinus problems in both adults and children. He performs complex ear and sinus surgery including hearing implantation and skull base surgery. He has pioneered introduction of Balloon Dilatation of the Eustachian tube in the UK, is the clinical lead of Cambridge regional skull base unit and a member of the hearing implant, head and neck, neurofibromatosis type 2 and pituitary multidisciplinary teams providing high quality specialist care.

Prof Tysome treats patients both children and adults with general ENT problems. He specialises in hearing and balance issues, sinusitis, paediatric ENT problems as well as hearing implantation and skull base surgery.

Prof Tysome has won many academic prizes over his career. He has edited five ENT books, published over 150 research papers and been invited to present his work internationally on numerous occasions.

Prof Tysome has a research interest in Eustachian tubes dysfunction and balloon dilatation of the Eustchian tubes, outcomes after hearing implantation and innovative treatments for skull base tumours. He is a former Vice-Chair of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence Interventional Procedures Committee and Past Honorary Secretary ofof the Royal Society of Medicine Otology Section, as well as President Elect of the British Skull Base Society and NHS England National Clinical Lead for Secialised Ear Surgery.

Qualifications

Prof Tysome studied medicine at Cambridge University and University College London, qualifying in 2000. He worked in London in ENT and spent some time in academic training to gain a PhD. He went on to gain specialist fellowship training in skull base surgery at Cambridge and Stanford University, California before taking up nis consultant post at Cambridge University Hospitals in 2012.
