Gavin Walters is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital and York Hospital, he was appointed in 2001. His specific interests are medical retinal diseases (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal vascular disease) and cataract surgery. For age-related macular degeneration treatment services in North Yorkshire, he is the lead clinician. Mr Walters trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London with a specialist attachment at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, his training specialised in medical retinal diseases. He also had Specialist Ophthalmic training rotation in Yorkshire and General medical (internal medicine) training in Leeds. He has helped develop new services for eye care locally, regionally and nationally. By international and national standards his quality of care, demonstrated by audit, is outstanding. Mr Walters also helped pioneer the regional age-related macular (AMD) and introduced this on the national stage. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and has investigated in a number of national and international research studies. He is also an advisor to NICE and the Department of health on Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Following an audit on his surgery, his results far exceed the UK and international standards (posterior capsule rupture rate [audit of 1600 consecutive cases] 20-50 times lower than national and international audits).
