Mr. David Bell is a highly skilled Consultant Neurosurgeon specializing in neurospinal surgery, particularly complex spine surgery. He practices at London Bridge Hospital, which is part of HCA Healthcare UK. Additionally, he divides his time between Kings College Hospital and his private practice.
With a focus on complex spine disorders such as pain, trauma, and disease, Mr. Bell provides comprehensive clinical care to patients. It is worth noting that scoliosis is an exception to his clinical work. He is dedicated to exploring non-surgical treatment options for spine-related conditions before considering invasive procedures. However, when surgery becomes necessary, he is trained in minimally invasive techniques.
Mr. Bell began his medical journey by obtaining his medical degree in 1996 from Edinburgh. He then pursued Basic Surgical Training in Edinburgh before transferring to London for specialized training in Complex Spinal Neurosurgery. In 2008, he became a Complex Spinal Neurosurgeon at Kings College Hospital, London. During his time there, he served as the regional clinical lead for spinal cancer and trauma until 2020, significantly contributing to the establishment of exceptional treatment standards.
From 2015 to 2021, Mr. Bell held the role of Regional Network Lead for South East London and Kent. He also served as an executive member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons. Additionally, he took on the responsibility of National Lead for the British Spinal Registry (BSR), a tool used to ensure the quality of surgical care throughout the United Kingdom.
Mr. Bell is actively engaged in the medical community and regularly attends and lectures at conferences both in the United Kingdom and abroad. He has a medicolegal practice where he acts as an expert witness, particularly with an interest in Cauda Equina Syndrome. His extensive research on Cauda Equina Syndrome and Thoracic Disc herniations has resulted in the publication of over 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers, demonstrating his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field.

Mr David Bell is clear and professional in his patient interactions. He is recognised for performing complex spinal procedures, including micro discectomy, thoracic decompression, and various spinal fusion surgeries. Patients frequently report significant pain relief and life-changing results, alongside efficient treatment and rapid recovery. A significant number of patients seek Mr Bell's expertise for back pain and lower back pain concerns.
I attended Dr Bell’s clinic at a worrying time when my ability to walk was going downhill fast. He astutely identified the cause as a particular narrowing in my spine at T10-11. Dr Bell’s efficiency at expediting my surgery and steadfast support afterwards have secured a smooth recovery. By now I’ve managed to travel to my holiday home and comfortably go on long walks in the Swiss mountains, have my life back.
I recently had spinal surgery under the care of Mr Bell. The entire process from start to finish was very efficient, professional and faultless. After suffering significant back pain for over a year , Mr Bell very swiftly diagnosed my problem. The surgery he performed was extremely successful and has enabled me to lead a normal life again pain free. I would highly recommend his services.
Eminent surgeon, worth travelling long distance especially to consult him. It's serendipitous that I was in London visiting family just before needing urgent spinal decompression under his care. Since the operation my mobility has quickly recovered to a safe functional level thanks to Mr Bell's brilliant expertise.
Recent spinal decompression surgery. I found Mr Bell's approach to be first class. A very well informed and balanced view provided pre-op. Post-recovery, to-date the results have been very positive, which has had a transformative effect on my quality of life.
My surgery has been so successful I can now walk steadily and much further, for several miles without pain. Mr Bell is very patient and communicative, I had plenty of time to ask questions in clinic. My other, milder narrowing at L4 is being managed conservatively and I can rest assured that it will be operated on only when it becomes absolutely necessary. My quality of life has improved tremendously and the doctor in my family has nominated Mr Bell for a greatly deserved award.
Mr. Bell performed a micro discectomy after I had suffered chronic pain for a significant time. At a consultation prior to the procedure, he gave a clear and helpful explanation of what would happen and how I was likely to feel post op. Due to the nature of the procedure, I was pain free almost immediately. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Bell, whose professionalism and obvious experience inspires confidence. He is also friendly and approachable and genuinely interested in his patients. The care I received at HCA London Bridge Hospital was also second to none.
A charming man who explains everything clearly. My operation was a great success. It has changed my life for the better.
I had a herniated diskoptemy operation with Mr Bell. Alongside his assistant, Alex, I was treated with thorough professionalism at every step of the way. I was in extreme pain before seeing David, and they rapidly moved me through the various stages of the treatment process (ie consultation, then scan, then steroids and then full herniated disk operation), at pace. That meant that, at all times, I felt confident that my paid was being dealt with by professionals and as soon as possible. On a couple of occasions, I felt that Mr Bell accelerated my consultations and ultimately the operation, and he rearranged his own time on one occasion to make it work quickly for me. Alex (his assistant) was the person that efficiently made the appointments happen behind the scenes and they clearly make a good team. I have now visited a number of sports physios and one doctor, who have commented on both my pace of recovery and the neatness and recovery of the area & muscles around the operation area. I can only believe that my rapid recovery has been brought about by an efficient operating technique. I am now almost out of almost any pain or discomfort (7 weeks after the operation) and I am truly grateful for what has happened, as life was not pleasant beforehand.
Everyone was friendly and put you at ease. Mr Bell explained everything very clearly. It put me at ease.
Mr David Bell is an outstanding world-class expert, most talented surgeon who has saved my father from paralysis in a wheelchair, enabling him to live a normal life again. Mr Bell promptly carried out delicate thoracic decompression surgery with real-time neurophysiological monitoring of electrical signals to track nerve function, increase precision and safety. Post-operative recovery was rapid, with immediate beneficial results. Mr Bell is very approachable and easy to talk to. All perioperative planning was managed so efficiently by his office. I’ve known Mr Bell from 20 years ago through my work as a doctor and have ultimate trust in him to look after my nearest and dearest family members. We are ever grateful and know that, as a patient, you will be in the best, safest hands possible.
My go to colleague for my friends. When my time comes, me too.
