Associate Professor Winifred Nolan

Winnie Nolan is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Associate Professor of Glaucoma Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  In over 20 years’ experience as a consultant, she has become recognised as an expert on complex surgical glaucoma management and cataract surgery.

Clinical expertise

Winnie is a National and International Key Opinion Leader in Glaucoma and is sought after for her expertise in challenging primary and secondary glaucoma and primary angle closure glaucoma.   She performs trabeculectomy surgery, minimally invasive bleb surgery (Preserflo),  aqueous shunts, complex glaucoma revision surgery, laser procedures (including Selective laser trabeculoplasty), and cataract surgery with monofocal, toric, multifocal and EDOF IOLs.

Training

She completed her medical degree at the University of Birmingham, and Ophthalmology
and glaucoma fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. She obtained a doctorate (MD) at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL, leading field work in Mongolia into screening for primary angle closure glaucoma. Following her training, she completed a fellowship with Professor Paul Chew in Singapore where she assisted with innovating new research into angle closure diagnosis and gained experience of the surgical management in angle closure. She was a consultant for 3 years at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre before taking up her current post at Moorfields in 2010.

Research

In her role as Associate Professor of Glaucoma research Winnie works with an international team at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine developing a research programme targeting glaucoma blindness in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent work includes using portable technology to screen for glaucoma, and a trial of different laser treatments in Nigeria. She has published widely in the field of Primary angle closure glaucoma and prevention of glaucoma blindness in low-resource settings.  She is an invited speaker around the world sharing her research findings and clinical expertise.  She supervises UK and International PhD and Masters students.

Teaching and training

Winnie is a trainer of future glaucoma surgeons from the UK and around the world and led the development of glaucoma surgery training for West African Ophthalmologists at the Lions International Eye Centre in Accra, Ghana. She teaches ophthalmology residents and optometrists, and lectures on Masters programmes at Moorfields/UCL and LSHTM.

Clinical Director for Moorfields South Division 2013-2016.  Trustee and Chair of Clinical Advisory Panel, Glaucoma UK.  Chair of Scientific Programme Planning Committee, World Glaucoma Congress 2016-2019.  Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium co-chair 2014-1018.  Member of Board of Governors, World Glaucoma Association.  Editorial board member, EYE journal.  Co-author of RCOphth guidelines: Management of Primary angle closure glaucoma.  British Council for the Prevention of Blindness Advisory Board Panel member 2012-2018 and Trustee 2020-2021
