Dr Michael Canty

Dr Michael Canty is a highly skilled Consultant Paediatric and Adult Neurosurgeon who specialises in providing comprehensive neurosurgical care. With a deep commitment to patient-centred care, he treats both children and adults experiencing complex neurological conditions. His clinical practice focuses on delivering advanced surgical interventions with a reassuring and compassionate approach, ensuring that patients and their families are fully supported throughout their treatment journey.

Dr Canty began his academic journey by earning a degree in pharmacology from University College Dublin, followed by a Master of Science in neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh. He then completed his medical training at the University of Oxford, graduating with a distinction. Dr Canty undertook his specialist neurosurgical training in Dundee and Glasgow, and subsequently completed a prestigious fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery in Toronto, Canada. He is a member of the British Paediatric Neurosurgery Group and holds professional qualifications including the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Surgical Neurology.

In his clinical practice, Dr Canty has a particular interest in paediatric neurosurgery, including the management of brain tumours, hydrocephalus, and traumatic brain injuries. He is also actively involved in tone management surgery, performing specialised procedures such as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy to help children with cerebral palsy. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Canty is dedicated to medical research, focusing on areas such as intracranial pressure monitoring, brain tissue oxygen monitoring, and the application of advanced technologies to improve outcomes for acutely brain-injured patients.
