Miss Mel Field is a Consultant Surgeon specialising in renal transplantation, surgery for renal failure, and complex parathyroid surgery. She practises privately at The Harborne Hospital and The Priory Hospital, alongside her NHS role at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Graduating from the University of Birmingham in 2002 with distinction in medicine, Miss Field completed her junior and higher surgical training across the West Midlands. Her commitment to medical education led her to obtain a Master’s degree in the subject, and she has held prominent teaching roles, including Royal College of Surgeons Tutor at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
During her higher surgical training, she completed an MD focused on biomarkers of acute kidney injury in renal transplantation, which sparked her enduring interest in transplantation and renal surgery. She has since developed a sub-specialist focus on parathyroid surgery, chairing the Parathyroid Multidisciplinary Team meeting at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and driving significant service improvements.
Her expertise covers primary hyperparathyroidism, normocalcaemic hyperparathyroid disease, MEN-related parathyroid conditions, and renal-derived parathyroid disease. Miss Field is a member of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, the British Transplant Society, and the Vascular Access Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
