About Dr Matthew Brown

Dr Matthew Brown is a Consultant in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, where he was appointed in 2013. He has extensive experience in managing a broad range of gastrointestinal and liver conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, small bowel dysmotility and functional dyspepsia/gastroparesis, reflux and hiatus hernia, swallowing difficulties, and general hepatology. He is also highly experienced in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopic cancer surveillance and the removal of colonic polyps.

Dr Brown’s clinical practice combines evidence-based dietary, pharmacological and lifestyle treatments. He works collaboratively with both patients and colleagues and runs a joint medical and surgical clinic for NHS patients with complex bowel disease. He is known for delivering up-to-date, patient-centred care and receives excellent feedback from patients and peers alike.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Brown maintains an active research portfolio aligned with his specialist interests. He is the Associate Clinical Director for Research in Medicine at Basingstoke Hospital and is involved in clinical trials of investigational drugs, surveillance programmes and endoscopy research.

He began his academic career at the University of Bristol in 1995, graduating with a first-class honours degree in Anatomy in 1998, followed by his medical degree with honours in 2001. During medical school, he was awarded multiple prizes in medicine, paediatrics and anatomy. He achieved Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2004 and completed specialist gastroenterology training within the Wessex Deanery. He then undertook three years of PhD research at the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre NIHR Biomedical Research Unit, graduating in 2012 before returning to Hampshire to complete his clinical training and take up his consultant post in 2013. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

Dr Brown is also a committed educator, acting as both an educational and clinical supervisor for resident doctors in Basingstoke. He undertakes annual audit and appraisal to ensure high standards of practice.
