Dr Manish Patel

Dr Manish Patel is a consultant gastroenterologist based in Portsmouth, with more than two decades of experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy. He sees adults with digestive symptoms, from reflux, abdominal pain, bloating and change in bowel habit to iron deficiency, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease. His aim is a clear explanation, a clear plan and no unnecessary delay.

He is JAG-accredited in both upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy and has performed many thousands of gastroscopies, colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopies. His results are consistently strong against national quality standards. He is known for careful, comfortable procedures, and he takes time beforehand to explain what will happen and why, so patients feel informed and at ease.

Dr Patel qualified in medicine at King’s College London (MBBS, with distinction in medicine, and BSc) and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. He completed a Wellcome Trust research fellowship and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine by the University of Southampton for his work on pancreatic fibrosis. He holds specialist registration in gastroenterology and general internal medicine, which gives him a broad, whole-patient approach, particularly for people with several conditions or symptoms that don’t fit neatly into one category.

He leads an endoscopy service and has a long record of clinical leadership, audit and service improvement, with a particular interest in quality, patient safety and getting diagnoses made early.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Patel teaches and mentors doctors and students. He founded the Dr Mike King Trust, which supports local young people aspiring to careers in medicine through events, mentoring and practical guidance, and he is active in local health education.
