Mr Jonathan Richardson

Mr. Jonathan Richardson is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of University Hospitals Birmingham. He graduated with honours in surgery from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2005 and completed comprehensive training in both general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands.

Jonathan specialises in colorectal cancer management, performing high-volume laparoscopic and open colorectal resections with excellent patient outcomes. His expertise includes complex hernia surgery, including laparoscopic repairs.

An accomplished clinical researcher, Jonathan earned his MD from the University of Birmingham for translational colorectal cancer research, which won the Best Clinical Research Award. He remains actively involved in clinical trials as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator on multiple NIHR studies and is a leading recruiter in his centre.

Jonathan also practices privately at the Priory Hospital and Harborne Hospital in Birmingham. He is deeply committed to surgical education, acting as lead undergraduate surgical tutor, senior clinical examiner, honorary senior lecturer, and GMC-accredited Named Educational Supervisor. He leads the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills faculty.

Outside work, Jonathan enjoys running, swimming, walking, and plays veteran’s football while coaching junior teams locally.
