About Dr John Griffiths
Dr John Griffiths is a highly experienced specialist in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care Medicine and Pre-operative Assessment, with a career dedicated to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care. He completed his medical training at Oxford University (1992) and St Bartholomew’s Medical School in London (1995) before going on to achieve Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1999. He was later awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2002 and Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in 2006.
In 2009, Dr Griffiths was appointed Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. His clinical focus is on ensuring patients are fully prepared for surgery, maintaining safety throughout anaesthesia, and supporting optimal pain management and post-operative recovery.
Dr Griffiths provides anaesthesia for day case procedures as well as higher-risk surgeries that may require pre-operative assessment and preparation. His specialist areas are ENT, colorectal, vascular and breast reconstructive surgery. Dr Griffiths is a POETTS accredited cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) physician. He also specialises in intravenous sedation techniques for endoscopy and bronchsopy procedures. He works closely within a multidisciplinary team of highly respected surgeons and specialists to deliver coordinated, high-quality care.
Outside of his professional work, Dr Griffiths enjoys golf, DJing and gardening when the time allows.

When I was treated for my vasectomy I went fully under and didn’t feel a thing. I woke up fine and the pain medication lasted through the evening just as I was told.
Dr. Griffiths is very good and has provided excellent care during my operation hospitalisation. I received great pain relief assistance after my operation. I felt taken care of by Dr. Griffiths and Mr. Reddy.
Dr Griffiths was absolutely wonderful. Took the absolute best care of me and made me feel at ease and took the edge of an experience which I found terrifying . Dr Griffiths explained everything so well both before and after my surgery. I was very grateful he was my Anaesthetist and he really is an absolute asset to the NHS if I ever had surgery again I would want him to be my Anaesthetist !!
Dr Griffiths was professional, kind and made me feel completely at ease. He explained everything in great detail to myself and my partner and we both knew straight away I would be in safe hands Several colleagues of Dr Griffiths in the Surgical Day Unit agreed with me when I said Dr Griffiths was wonderful, and they said he is an absolute p!easure to work with, and staff like to work when he does. He respects both patients and colleagues alike treating them with kindness and support Dr Griffiths was lovely when he administered my anaesthetic, he was so calm and I felt totally relaxed and cared for We also received a text message later in the evening after my procedure from Dr Griffiths to ensure all was well. That was extremely reassuring We will be writing to Dr Griffiths and his team to personally thank him\them - what an outstanding experience I have had Thank you so much
I had anaesthesia from Dr Griffiths when I underwent breast reduction at the John Radcliffe Hospital. I had a pleasant experience peri-operatively and woke up very calmly and comfortably. My pain is well controlled and I’m recovering well. Very grateful to you and the team for supporting me through the procedure. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Once again I have been thrilled with the care I reveived from John. I would however like to mention in particular my care last year when I had much more involved, longer surgery. Throughout the course of the day, John sent regular messages and called my partner with updates and they were so very much appreciated.
