Mr James Duncan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2011, having also completed an intercalated research degree (BMedSci (Hons)) in 2009, focused on the development of a novel imaging system. He gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 2015 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2021. He completed his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in Oxford in 2022, where he also served as Chief Resident for the orthopaedic deanery.
During his later training, Mr Duncan specialised in hip and knee arthroplasty, gaining experience in the world-renowned revision unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. He subsequently undertook two international fellowships: an AO Trauma Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on minimally invasive fracture fixation, and a year-long fellowship in Sydney, Australia, where he trained in complex hip and knee surgery, including computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement.
Mr Duncan returned to the UK in 2024 and was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the ambulatory arthroplasty service. This programme enhances patient recovery following hip and knee surgery, enabling many patients to return home on the same day. He was among the first surgeons to perform robotic knee replacements at the Trust.
In private practice, Mr Duncan consults at Circle Reading Hospital and the Berkshire Independed Hospital. He offers robotic-assisted knee replacements using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions system, which allows personalised surgical planning and improved outcomes for total knee replacement.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Duncan remains active in research. He has acted as a sub-investigator for clinical trials into robotic joint replacement and uncemented knee replacements, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and co-authored a book chapter on the use of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery.
His specialist interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, revision (“re-do”) joint replacements, computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement surgery, and lower limb trauma surgery.

The whole process was excellent, everything was explained and any questions I had answered. All of which helped with a rapid recovery and exceeded my expectations.
The whole experience with Mr Duncan and the Team at the hospital was outstanding. The experience and explanations were very clear and advised what would be happening. The day of the procedure. I was well looked after & supported by the nurses . Mr duncan did an amazing job with my knee. Took a bit longer than expected as a lot to do but it went straight forward . The aftercare from the nurses & physio was outstanding. Had my 8 week check up and very pleased with the results . So much so Mr Duncan is going forward with my other knee .

It was brilliant, he said how well I was doing which coming from the consultant meant a lot! I had numerous questions and he answered them all very clearly.
I am incredibly happy with the care I’ve received from Mr Duncan. The initial consultation was thorough and professional, and the personalized plan of action he developed has been a game-changer for me. I’m already seeing significant progress in my knee recovery and feel confident that I’m on the right path to getting back to full strength. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for an attentive and effective specialist.
Dr Duncan was incredible, clear and precise through every meeting about what will happen before during and after my partial knee replacement. Always had time to talk and answer every question you never feel rushed or un cared for. Six weeks after my operation and I couldn't be happier. Thank you doctor for everything. Lee
