Mr James Duncan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2011, having also completed an intercalated research degree (BMedSci (Hons)) in 2009, focused on the development of a novel imaging system. He gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 2015 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2021. He completed his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in Oxford in 2022, where he also served as Chief Resident for the orthopaedic deanery.
During his later training, Mr Duncan specialised in hip and knee arthroplasty, gaining experience in the world-renowned revision unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. He subsequently undertook two international fellowships: an AO Trauma Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on minimally invasive fracture fixation, and a year-long fellowship in Sydney, Australia, where he trained in complex hip and knee surgery, including computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement.
Mr Duncan returned to the UK in 2024 and was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the ambulatory arthroplasty service. This programme enhances patient recovery following hip and knee surgery, enabling many patients to return home on the same day. He was among the first surgeons to perform robotic knee replacements at the Trust.
In private practice, Mr Duncan consults at Circle Reading Hospital and the Berkshire Independed Hospital. He offers robotic-assisted knee replacements using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions system, which allows personalised surgical planning and improved outcomes for total knee replacement.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Duncan remains active in research. He has acted as a sub-investigator for clinical trials into robotic joint replacement and uncemented knee replacements, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and co-authored a book chapter on the use of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery.
His specialist interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, revision (“re-do”) joint replacements, computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement surgery, and lower limb trauma surgery.

Mr James Duncan is clear, professional, and excellent in his interactions with patients. Patients praise his surgical skill across various orthopaedic procedures, including total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and hip replacement. Patients experience effective pain relief, rapid recovery, and a prompt return to daily activities, with many describing outcomes as outstanding. The feedback highlights his expertise in hip and knee joint replacement surgeries.
I am incredibly grateful to Mr James Duncan for the outstanding care I received during my recent robotic knee replacement surgery. The results have exceeded all my expectations. Thanks to Mr Duncan’s exceptional skill and advanced robotic technique, my recovery has been remarkably smooth. My post-operative pain was highly manageable, my incision is healing beautifully, and the alignment of my new knee feels natural and stable. Just 7 weeks after surgery, my mobility has improved dramatically. The follow-up care from Mr Duncan has been equally excellent. If you are considering robotic knee surgery, I cannot recommend Mr James Duncan highly enough.
Mr Duncan is an exceptional clinician; my hip is almost back to normal after only 6 weeks, with no pain and amazing flexibility already. He also communicates with clarity and patience which creates confidence when facing a relatively stressful medical procedure.
Overall excellent from start our first meeting with Mr Duncan to discharge date. Everything was well explained
Excellent. I had total confidence and would happily recommend.
Mr Duncan has been responsible for my total knee replacement. Throughout he has been clear and transparent in setting expectations about the operation. He has offered good advice on rehabilitation which i have followed with the support of the Physio team. I feel my outcome after eight weeks is really positive and far better than i had hoped at this stage. This will doubtless lead to a full and complete recovery in the coming weeks.
Extremely pleased with everything Mr Duncan has done and I would highly recommend him
Absolutely outstanding in all aspects of my pre treatment, surgery in itself and post treatment. The surgery has been life-changing and I feel like I've never had any of the issues to start with. It is like a second chance, with all my exercise, running after the kids and everything I used to do before the issue started. Can't thank him enough.
State of the art surgeon. I have no hesitancy in referring my patients to James.

Orthopaedic SurgeonMr Duncan and I trained together in the Thames Valley Deanery. He has excelled in his training and had first class fellowships. This has led him to a consultant appointment at the renowned Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He is a real asset and bolsters the already outstanding hip and knee department. He is a fantastic colleague and surgeon. I would recommend his services to anyone.
