Mr James Duncan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2011, having also completed an intercalated research degree (BMedSci (Hons)) in 2009, focused on the development of a novel imaging system. He gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 2015 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2021. He completed his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in Oxford in 2022, where he also served as Chief Resident for the orthopaedic deanery.
During his later training, Mr Duncan specialised in hip and knee arthroplasty, gaining experience in the world-renowned revision unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. He subsequently undertook two international fellowships: an AO Trauma Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on minimally invasive fracture fixation and the direct anterior approach for hip replacement, and a year-long fellowship in Sydney, Australia, where he trained in complex hip and knee surgery, including computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement.
Mr Duncan returned to the UK in 2024 and was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the ambulatory arthroplasty service. This programme enhances patient recovery following hip and knee surgery, enabling many patients to return home on the same day. He was among the first surgeons to perform robotic knee replacements at the Trust.
In private practice, Mr Duncan consults at Circle Reading Hospital and Spire Dunedin Hospital. He offers robotic-assisted knee replacements using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions system, which allows personalised surgical planning and improved outcomes for total knee replacement.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Duncan remains active in research. He has acted as a sub-investigator for clinical trials into robotic joint replacement and uncemented knee replacements, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and co-authored a book chapter on the use of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery.
His specialist interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, revision (“re-do”) joint replacements, computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement surgery, and lower limb trauma surgery.

Mr James Duncan receives frequent praise for being professional, brilliant, and great in his interactions with patients. Patients consistently report positive outcomes and smooth recovery following procedures such as hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. His care is described as faultless from beginning to end, with clear explanations provided regarding the surgical process and aftercare. Patients often highlight the successful management of osteoarthritis and effective total knee replacement procedures under his care.
I am very pleased with the results of Mr Duncan performing my total knee replacement. He was very professional and took time to make me feel at ease with the procedure. My knee is performing very well after only a few weeks and the wound looks amazing with no ugly stitching for which I am very grateful. Thank you
The surgeon was excellent The after care was excellent I would say to anyone if you have the opportunity to go to the Berkshire independent Go there
From a previous hip encounter I already had confidence in James's knowledge and skills. This second project, much more difficult than the first, gave confirmation of his talent. He has done a remarkable repair job, and in only ten months I have almost completely recovered.
The consultant was very professional helpful and informative
I couldn’t be any happier, Mr James Duncan has done a brilliant job on my left hip replacement, all it’s good and I am forever grateful to Mr Duncan. 😘
Mr Duncan is highly professional in every way and achieves outstanding results.
I have been under James Duncan's care for over a year having had four operations on my knee which got infected under a total knee replacement which had been in place for 8 years. A year ago this week I had the final part of a two stage revision which has worked wonders. I do not feel that I could have had any better care both during my three hospital stays and afterwards. James and the whole Trauma & Orthopaedic team were absolutely brilliant as were the staff on the three RBH wards where I spent a total of 55 days in 2024 and into January 2025. I am extremely thankful for having been under the care of James and his team and feel very fortunate to have had him as my orthopaedic surgeon.
I have worked with James for many years. I have found him to be honest, reliable and hard working. Being fellowship trained he is an absolute expert in his field. I would absolutely trust him with operating on my family and could not recommend him highly enough.

Mr Sam Nahas
Orthopaedic SurgeonMr Duncan and I trained together in the Thames Valley Deanery. He has excelled in his training and had first class fellowships. This has led him to a consultant appointment at the renowned Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He is a real asset and bolsters the already outstanding hip and knee department. He is a fantastic colleague and surgeon. I would recommend his services to anyone.
