Mr James Duncan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2011, having also completed an intercalated research degree (BMedSci (Hons)) in 2009, focused on the development of a novel imaging system. He gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 2015 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2021. He completed his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in Oxford in 2022, where he also served as Chief Resident for the orthopaedic deanery.
During his later training, Mr Duncan specialised in hip and knee arthroplasty, gaining experience in the world-renowned revision unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. He subsequently undertook two international fellowships: an AO Trauma Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on minimally invasive fracture fixation, and a year-long fellowship in Sydney, Australia, where he trained in complex hip and knee surgery, including computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement.
Mr Duncan returned to the UK in 2024 and was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the ambulatory arthroplasty service. This programme enhances patient recovery following hip and knee surgery, enabling many patients to return home on the same day. He was among the first surgeons to perform robotic knee replacements at the Trust.
In private practice, Mr Duncan consults at Circle Reading Hospital and the Berkshire Independed Hospital. He offers robotic-assisted knee replacements using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions system, which allows personalised surgical planning and improved outcomes for total knee replacement.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Duncan remains active in research. He has acted as a sub-investigator for clinical trials into robotic joint replacement and uncemented knee replacements, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and co-authored a book chapter on the use of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery.
His specialist interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, revision (“re-do”) joint replacements, computer-assisted and robotic joint replacement surgery, and lower limb trauma surgery.

Patients report a smooth process, good recovery, and excellent overall care. Common procedures are hip replacement, knee replacement, and total knee replacement.
Absolutely outstanding in all aspects of my pre treatment, surgery in itself and post treatment. The surgery has been life-changing and I feel like I've never had any of the issues to start with. It is like a second chance, with all my exercise, running after the kids and everything I used to do before the issue started. Can't thank him enough.
I can't praise Mr Duncan and Circle Health Group enough. I have recieved exemplary care and treatment throughout the entire process of having my hip replacement. I am thrilled with the outcome. My most recent visit was my post opp follow up with Mr Duncan, he was clear concise and thorough, explaining how the procedure had gone and what I should expect in my healing journey.
Physio was very helpful Had very good update with Dr Duncan
I am very happy with the care i received. James Duncan is an extremely proficient surgeon. He exhibited a most caring bedside manner. He was thorough in his consultation, and I felt that he genuinely cared about my progress.
I am so pleased with Dr. James Duncan's professionalism, knowledge and 'bedside' manner when dealing with my recent partial knee replacement, and upcoming second partial knee replacement. I couldn't have asked for anyone better to manage my case. My consultation today, was on time, very welcoming and no question I asked was too much bother. He also made clear that the second operation was entirely my choice based on the current prognosis. I'm looking forward to meeting him again when the availability for my second knee operation is possible.
Absolutely brilliant. I cannot fault anyone about the manner or way I've been treated. Everything was explained and made clear to me. Very nice people from the reception ,physio, nursing and surgery team. Thanks to everyone.
Me Duncan and mr steadman have been so informative and helpful throughout the whole experience They reassured me as I was very anxious my husband passed away a week before my injections and mr steadman was very kind as I was emotional going alone but he talked to me throughout the procedure I am very grateful to both
Successful post-op visit. Signed off fit for purpose. Good to be free of the pain. Thank you.
My most recent visit was for a post-op outpatient appointment. Everything was on time. I had every opportunity to talk to Mr Duncan and for him to answer my questions. A very positive experience.
State of the art surgeon. I have no hesitancy in referring my patients to James.
