Dr Helen Matthews

Dr Helen Matthews is an accomplished Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist who provides comprehensive, compassionate care for patients experiencing a wide spectrum of digestive and liver conditions. Dedicated to delivering person-centred medical care, Dr Matthews combines clinical excellence with an empathetic approach to help patients understand their diagnosis, manage their symptoms, and improve their long-term digestive health.

In her clinical practice, Dr Matthews manages both upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders alongside complex liver conditions. Her areas of expertise include the investigation of chronic indigestion, unexplained abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits. As a specialist in Hepatology, she regularly treats patients presenting with abnormal liver function tests, alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Additionally, Dr Matthews is an accredited Bowelscope Endoscopist who performs diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, with a strong commitment to gastrointestinal cancer screening. Alongside her clinical commitments, she serves as Research Director and acts as Principal Investigator for numerous clinical research studies in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Dr Matthews gained her primary medical degrees from the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. She subsequently completed higher specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology across several renowned London teaching trusts. Throughout her training, Dr Matthews achieved multiple academic honours, including a Foundation Scholarship from Cambridge University and a prestigious Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship at Imperial College London for her research into Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. She is an active member of professional bodies including the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and the British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL).
