About Dr. Emma Shawkat
Dr. Emma Shawkat is a Consultant Obstetrician and Sub-Specialist in Fetal and Maternal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. She graduated from The University of Manchester in 2006 and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the North West Deanery, completing sub-specialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine. Dr Shawkat holds an MD for her research on hypertension in pregnancy.
As the Maternal Medicine lead at St Mary’s Hospital, Dr Shawkat specialises in managing women with complex medical conditions such as diabetes and renal disease. She provides antenatal care in the Maternal Medicine Clinic and Velocity Clinic, where she treats women with pre-existing diabetes referred from across the region.
Dr. Shawkat also serves as the lead obstetrician for the North West Maternal Medicine Network, working to improve maternal care, outcomes, and patient experience. In the Fetal Medicine Unit, she performs detailed anatomy scans and complex invasive procedures, including intrauterine transfusions, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling. With extensive experience in managing complex deliveries, including caesarean sections, Dr. Shawkat is dedicated to delivering high-quality, holistic patient care.

Dr Shawkat delivered my second baby via c section late in 2025. It was a real joy to see her for monthly appointments in the run up to birth and hugely reassuring knowing she would be delivering my daughter. She's incredibly kind and considerate, and both me and my husband felt extremely well cared for from our very first appointment, right through to the post birth debrief.
Dr. Emma saw us after a complication presented early on in my pregnancy. We called that morning, and by that afternoon, we had already had the consultation, scan, diagnosis, and a plan. We were put at ease and reassured by Dr. Emma’s explanation, experience, and advice.
Highly recommend Emma and the team at HCA Healthcare, I was dealt with professionalism, care and had the added bonus of getting to know my consultant throughout my pregnancy which made me feel like a person and more at ease, the clinic is also brand new and such a positive calming experience. Going into my c section in the knowledge that the team knew about me personally and saw me regularly was so valuable. Although a last minute complication meant I did not end up having my c section with Emma I still received support from her and the team even on the day and if I am lucky enough to be pregnant again in the future I will definitely want Emma to be my consultant again.
