About Dr Emily Porter

About me

I’m Dr Emily Porter (PhD, RD), a specialist gastroenterology dietitian at The Gut Health Clinic, supporting adults with digestive conditions and gut-related health concerns. I bring over six years of clinical experience across the NHS, private practice, and academic research, with a particular focus on the gut microbiome, immune health, and how these factors influence wider health outcomes.

How I can help you

I support people dealing with ongoing digestive symptoms, complex diagnoses, or health issues that haven’t improved with standard or generic advice.

My areas of expertise include:

  • Functional gut symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea and constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Coeliac disease and gluten-related disorders
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Bile acid malabsorption (BAM) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

I also support individuals with:

  • Type 2 diabetes and metabolic health
  • Liver and pancreatic conditions
  • Women’s health, including menopause and endometriosis
  • Gut–brain and gut–immune interactions, including inflammatory conditions

My approach

I take a holistic, evidence-based approach that reflects the close connection between gut health and other systems in the body.

Rather than applying one-size-fits-all advice, I focus on understanding how your symptoms relate to your physiology, psychological wellbeing and lifestyle. From there, we build a personalised plan that is realistic, effective and adaptable as your needs evolve.

A key part of my work is helping you feel more confident in your food choices, while supporting long-term health without unnecessary restriction.

My experience

I began my career in academic research, completing a PhD in virology at the University of Bristol, where I explored the relationships between immune responses, viral infections and the microbiome. I now use this scientific basis to inform my work as a clinical dietitian focussed on practical, patient-focused care to help clients feel empowered to manage their health.

Alongside my work at The Gut Health Clinic, I have held specialist acute and community roles within the NHS, including supporting patients with coeliac disease and type 2 diabetes. I am a member of the healthcare panel for The IBS Network and have experience as a health and science writer, as well as teaching the next generation of dietitians at Wrexham University as a Senior Lecturer.

The Gut Health Clinic

I work at The Gut Health Clinic, a specialist service led by gut health scientist Dr Megan Rossi (@theguthealthdoctor). The clinic brings together a team of expert gastro dietitians with 80 years of combined clinical experience and has supported more than 5,000 clients since 2018.

We work closely with GPs, gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure your care is fully integrated and aligned with your wider medical needs.

What to expect in your first session

Your first appointment is a structured consultation where we take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals in detail.

Following this, you’ll receive a personalised plan with clear, practical steps to move forward. I’ll also guide you on how many sessions are likely to be needed so you have clarity from the outset.

If you have private health insurance (including Aviva, Bupa, Cigna, Healix, Vitality or WPA), your appointments may be covered. Get in touch, and we can guide you through this.
