Mr Eduardo Normando

Dr. Eduardo Normando is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Western Eye and Charing Cross Hospitals, as well as a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He specialises in glaucoma, ophthalmic emergencies, and general ophthalmology, with a particular focus on the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma using medications and laser therapies.

Dr. Normando is the clinical lead for the ophthalmology outpatient clinic at Charing Cross Hospital, where he has established a high throughput diagnostic clinic aimed at improving patient flow across satellite sites.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Normando is an active researcher and a member of the Imperial College Ophthalmic Research Group (ICORG) Clinical Trials Unit. He is the Chief Investigator for four investigator-led clinical trials. His research interests are primarily in the development of innovative non-invasive retinal imaging techniques for assessing therapeutic strategies in ophthalmic and neurodegenerative diseases.

One of his notable research projects involves the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the progression of glaucoma. Using a Convolutional Neural Network, his study has demonstrated the ability to detect glaucoma progression up to 18 months earlier than the current gold standard method by identifying fluorescently positive dying cells in retinal images.

Dr. Normando is also involved in the development of a semi-automated, headset-mounted fundus camera, funded by the Med Tech Super Connector (MTSC), and has received national and international funding for the new applications of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

He serves as a board member of the Royal Society of Medicine Ophthalmology Section and as secretary for the glaucoma section of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research. He is also a member of several prestigious societies, including the European Glaucoma Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the European Ophthalmology Society.
