    About

Dr Richard Hull is a Consultant Kidney Specialist or Nephrologist at the Renal and Transplantation Unit, St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge. He completed his specialist training in Renal Medicine within the South Thames Renal Programme. During this time he completed his PhD as a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Fellow at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, Imperial College.

He spent his first 5 years as Consultant Nephrologist at the Renal Unit, King's College Hospital where he looked after haemodialysis patients, managed renal ward inpatients and provided a weekly inpatient consult service for patients with acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease at the Trust’s Princess Royal University Hospital campus alongside outpatient clinics in both general and autoimmune kidney disease at both campuses. He was clinical lead for vascular access and ran the local registrar training programme.

Dr Hull's outpatient work focuses on his specialist interest of autoimmune renal disease as well as general nephrology outpatients including chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. His clinical research interests are focused on patients with autoimmune renal disease and he is an established investigator for clinical studies in IgA nephropathy, primary FSGS and lupus nephritis alongside renal anaemia. Dr Hull is Speciality Group Lead for Renal Disorders for the NIHR South Thames Clinical Research Network and Co-chair of the Vascular Access workstream for the South London Renal Clinical Alliance. Nationally he is an elected member of the Renal Association Council.

Dr Hull is able to offer consultations on all aspects of adult nephrology including acute and chronic kidney disease, proteinuria, hypertension (high blood pressure), renovascular disease, diabetic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease and glomerulonephritis including nephrotic syndrome (minimal change disease, FSGS, membranous nephropathy), lupus nephritis, ANCA vasculitis and IgA nephropathy. He is able to offer tailored advice for patients with early stages of kidney disease to prevent progression of their condition.

I was very pleased with the video consultation. Dr Richard Hull asked me numerous questions trying to pin point my problems and understand what had occurred some months earlier. He did not rush me and by the end of the consultation I felt that I was in good hands and from that time on things have happened very quickly. It has made me feel so much more relaxed and I have confidence that he will find out what is causing me my kidney problems.

I was feeling very unwell on the day of my appointment and very anxious about my'mystery illness' Dr Hull was very empathetic and calm in his approach, allowed me to ask questions throughout the session and asked me if I had more questions at the end. i felt that he checked me thoroughly and really listened to the complex account of the illness and my mixed symptoms. He gave me confidence in his explanation of the plan and the investigations to be done. Despite my impatience to find out my diagnosis I felt that I could trust him and stay with the process at present. I felt supported in his attitude toward the balance of psychological and physical factors, which so many doctors ignore. Thank you for a supportive consultation.

He was very clear in his explanations to both myself and my sixteen year old son (the patient) whilst at the same time being very reassuring. He was very easy to talk to and took time to answer all of our questions. His secretary was also delightful to deal with so overall a very positive experience.

I went to see Dr Hull with a list of questions. He was excellent - he took his time and patiently answered each one, providing really clear explanations. I would thoroughly recommend Dr Hull - if I had a similar problem again, I would have no hesitation in going back to see him. Thank you very much, Dr Hull.
