About Dr Thomas Richards

Dr Tom Richards, Consultant Clinical Oncologist, currently works within the University College London NHS Hospital (UCLH) NHS Trust and The Whittington NHS Hospital. He also sees patients in several other clinics privately. He is highly experienced in managing and treating breast cancer and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. In his daily work, he treats cancers of the breast, rectum, anal canal, colon, oesophagus, stomach, liver and pancreaticobiliary. He can perform a wide range of procedures including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biological targeted drugs. He has a special interest in specific radiotherapy techniques including Proton Beam Therapy (PBT), stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR), MRI-Linac, sterotactic radiosurgery (SRS/Gamma Knife), intensity-modulated, 4D-CT planning, deep inspiratory breath-hold, and image-guided radiotherapy.

Dr Richards graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine, before starting his specialist training in general internal medicine at King's College Hospital in London. Following this, he went on to do oncology training in 2015 at St Bartholomew's and The Royal Marsden Hospitals. During his training, he undertook a research degree at The Institute of Cancer Research examining the mechanisms by which therapeutic radiation affects normal tissues and strategies to detect and reduce late toxicity after curative treatment, he was later awarded a PhD for his work. His PhD work was also recognised by the research community as he was awarded the Johnson and Johnson clinical research prize in 2012 for this work. After he completed his training, he was appointed as Clinical Oncology Consultant at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London NHS Hospitals.

Dr Richards has several professional memberships including The Royal College of Physicians, ESMO, and ESTRO. Additionally, he has been appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists. He actively engages with the scientific community, having chaired and spoken at conferences and meetings around the world. He is also an excellent teacher, holding the position of the course tutor and examiner for an MSc course at the Institute of Cancer research and is the local principal investigator and clinical lead for several Breast and GI cancer clinical trials.

I feel very lucky to have been under the outstanding care of Dr. Richards during my recent radiotherapy. He was extremely clear and thorough in explaining the process and in talking me through any potential side effects. He provided numbers and facts on all points, and by doing so was able to reassure me completely around the side effects. My treatment took place at The London Clinic and their radiotherapy team were wonderful at helping me get through the process well, extremely knowledgeable and caring. I would recommend both Dr. Richards and the radiotherapy team at The London Clinic to any friend requiring radiotherapy and am grateful for the fantastic care received.

Dr Richards is very caring and is very happy and willing to offer explanation in detail, on any concerns you may have. He is very sympathetic and understanding of your concerns and it does not rush. He explained very clearly the radiotherapy process and it made me feel more confident about the step I was about to take. I highly recommend Dr Richards.
