Dr Shakil Rahman is a highly experienced Consultant in General, Internal, and Respiratory Medicine, appointed in 2001. He received his specialist registrar and senior registrar training at several prestigious university hospitals across England, including Sheffield University Hospitals (Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals) and later Imperial College London’s University Hospitals, notably Hammersmith and The Royal Brompton Hospitals (National Heart and Lung Institute).
During his five years as a Senior Research Fellow and Senior Registrar at Imperial, Dr Rahman developed advanced expertise in respiratory medicine and clinical research. Following his consultant appointment at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals, he played a pivotal role in establishing a modern respiratory department. This included creating sub-specialty respiratory clinics, launching a fibre-optic bronchoscopy service, and overseeing the development of a dedicated respiratory ward for the care of acute and complex inpatients.
Dr Rahman has a strong academic and research background, with specific interests in beta receptor polymorphisms and their impact on asthma phenotypes. He was among the early adopters of PET imaging for diagnosing lung inflammation and for the staging and management of lung cancer.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Rahman serves as Sub Dean for the undergraduate medical student body at Epsom and St Helier, supporting students primarily from St George's and Imperial College Medical Schools. He also chairs the Medical Audit Department, a role he has held for over a decade.

Dr Shakil Rahman is thorough, taking time to explain everything clearly and providing reassurance during patient interactions. His wealth of knowledge and depth of experience are central to his patient-focused approach, resulting in precise diagnoses and tailored treatment plans. These plans involve arranging tests such as CT scans and blood tests. Many patients commend their improved quality of life due to his care for conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis, and various breathing disorders.
I was accompanied by my sister and had a positive appointment with Dr Rahman recently. I was greeted with a smile which put me at ease. His personable manner continued throughout whilst I was being examined. He took time to explain issues to a student who was also present. I feel privileged to be under his care. I am confident that with his wealth of knowledge, experience and after further tests he will be able to provide an accurate diagnosis and treat accordingly. I look forward to seeing him again in November to review my existing drug regime and treatment plan. Thanks to Dr Rahman, I feel more uplifted than I have in a long time that my everyday life will improve and be less of a struggle!
I met the most amazing Dr . He took time to explain in length my condition in empathetic detail. I was so impressed and reassured.
Dr Rahman was kind, thoughtful, listened to my elderly father and offered sound guidance. He is clearly very experienced in his field.
I have been a patient of Dr. Rahman for 19 years. An exemplary consultant, who is helping me navigate a potential lymphoma/ sarcoidosis/lung cancer diagnosis. A meticulous practitioner, who explains all diagnoses with great clarity. He adopts not only an holistic approach for the patient but also for any attending family.Always has a reassuring presence and is always compassionate . No-one could be in better hands, I feel blessed to be treated by such an extraordinary physician.
We saw Dr Rahman this evening at Ashtead Hospital 27th May 2026. He took his time to explain everything about my chest and took his time to listen to my chest and we always find him friendly and always have time to explain everything.
I recently saw Dr Rahman on Wednesday 13th May and as usual he was thorough with his examination and explained everything to me and the resone why he had to give antibiotics for my chest. We also find Dr Rahman very friendly and explains everything and will always answer any questions and he never rushes us and treats us like human beinings.
I have been visiting Dr Rahman for the last 5 years. My recent visit to Dr Rahman was because I had breathing difficulties following a recent infection. He was his usual thorough and friendly self. He addressed my issues thoroughly and efficiently. It is no exaggeration to say that Dr Rahman's treatment over the last 5 years has transformed my quality of life and I would recommend him to any asthma sufferer in need of help. He is friendly, thorough and has a real depth of expertise and experience.
Dr Rahman is an excellent consultant in my opinion. Every appointment is informative and patient focused and he always offers relevant and helpful advice for my specific condition. Dr Rahman listens to my concerns regarding my A1AD and is always extremely empathetic in his nature. I have been under Dr Rahman’s care for approximately 25years so far, and I believe I am still doing so well because he is such a knowledgeable and caring consultant .
