About Dr Salim Shafeek

Dr Salim Shafeek is a consultant Haematologist practising at Worcestershire Royal NHS Hospital, where he is Clinical Director for Haematology & Oncology, and Head of Clinical Haematology for the Worcestershire County. At present he is actively involved in the reorganisation of the cancer network for the county.

Dr Shafeek has particular clinical interests in lymphoma and myeloma. In his clinic, he treats general haematology disease, including acute and chronic leukaemia, haemato-oncology, red cell disorders and thrombosis haemostasis. He underwent training in haemato-oncology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwick. At present, he is a PACES examiner for the MRCP (UK) exam at the Royal College of Physicians of London, Edinburgh & Glasgow.

He enjoys teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Birmingham, where he has been a Senior Lecturer in Haematology since 2005. He works closely with the Cure Leukemia Charity and is actively involved in fundraising activities for this charity, and for the Breast Cancer unit in Worcester. Away from the clinic, Dr Shafeek enjoys photography and cricket and is married with two children.

I have found Dr Shafeek to be tremendous support during my current course of treatment. He has explained in detail the relevance of all results at every stage, discussed the effect of medication and treatment on a regular basis and made himself available for contact by phone, message, email or video call at any time of the day

I have been a patient of Dr Shafeek for over 10 years. His help and care over such a long period of time has been absolutely amazing. With out his professional guidance and knowledge I feel it would have been a much more difficult journey.

I started to consult with Dr Shafeek in 2016 after a diagnosis of Essential Thrombocythemis and a very unsatisfactory experience with the first consultant. From the very first meeting he has always been very helpful, kind and extremely knowledgeable. He has helped with all of my various haemotology problems and I have found to his enourmous credit that he is always prepared to recommend and work with other consultants. I cannot praise too highly how he has helped me, including through the lockdown when we have had telephone consultations. He has very wide experince of MPNs, which is not always the case, and he has been a great source of support for me and my family.

Dr Shafeek has been an excellent doctor and my experience has been very positive under his treatment. His upbeat manner was a great help especially at the start of my journey with CLL and he has always taken the time to answer my questions - some of which were very detailed. He went far beyond what I would normally expect from a health professional. It was also obvious from the regard he was held by staff at the oncology facility at the Spire South Bank that he was a very trusted member of the profession who was very approachable and certainly went the extra mile for his patients.

I found Dr Shafeek to be a very clear in explaining very complex medical diagnosis. He took the time to make sure I understood clearly what he was saying. In the diagnosis we had a number of unknown issues and again Dr Shafeek took the time to discuss what this meant for my treatment and the next steps in the process. Overall my experience was very positive and I would highly recommend Dr Shafeek.
