Dr Jonathan Byrne, Consultant Cardiologist, is currently working within King's College Hospital, he has been working within this Trust since 2008. He is highly specialised in all matters of cardiology including the assessment and treatment of coronary and valvular heart disease, hypertension, heart rhythm disturbances, patients with angina, and heart failure. He is also an interventional cardiologist with a specific interest in the treatment of coronary artery disease – using angioplasty and stents. He also uses novel non-surgical therapies for patients with valvular heart disease, such as TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) and Mitraclip (percutaneous treatment of the mitral valve). He also carries out several imaging tests including transoesophageal echocardiography and cardiac CT scanning.
Dr Byrne began his medical education in Bristol where he graduated with his undergraduate medical degree, he then progressed to do his foundation years in the South East of England and London. During his training he undertook a research degree within the Department of Cardiology at King's College Hospital, resulting in him being awarded a PhD for his efforts. He completed his Higher Specialty Training in Interventional Cardiology King's College Hospital and Undertook training with a transesophageal echocardiography and cardiac CT scanning fellowship in Canada. He has thrived in his consultant position pioneering the use of novel percutaneous techniques to treat aortic and mitral valve disease.
Dr Byrne is also an active researcher, engaging in research focused on the molecular mechanisms which underlie the development of left ventricular hypertrophy, the application of coronary physiology in an interventional setting, and the differences and potential advantages of intervention performed from the radial artery.
