About Dr Anthony W Nathan

Anthony Nathan qualified as a doctor at the Middlesex Hospital, part of the University, in London over 50 years ago and has been a Consultant Cardiologist for more than 40 years. Most of his formal cardiactraining and subsequent professional life has been at St Bartholomew’s Hospital - now the largest cardiac centre in Europe - where he was Head of Cardiac Services for many years. The last seven of his 44 years in the NHS were at Watford General, where he was invited to set up a new invasive Arrhythmia Unit.

He is fully trained and active in all forms of cardiology, including the care of patients with symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness, blackouts, palpitations, and many other symptoms. Cardiac conditions he treats include all forms of heart rhythm disorders, including the use of pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. He treats patients with angina and coronary disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathies, heart valvular problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and most other cardiac issues.

His main special interest has been within the field of heart rhythm disorders, known as arrhythmias or electrophysiology. He performed the first catheter ablation in Europe at Barts in 1982, and a few years later, he led the team that implanted the first UK implantable defibrillator.

Now, mainly in out-patient practice, he offers superb availability with frequent clinics during the week. He is assisted by a long-standing team of four: one who handles secretarial duties, another whomakes all appointments, a physiologist in charge of remote pacemaker follow-up, and another in general administration.

With more than 50 years of experience as a doctor, he isknown for being caring, sympathetic, and easily available to his patients. He takes a holistic approach and listens carefully to what his patients tell him. He then gives a clear explanation of what the issue is and helps to involve patients in decision-making.   He works in close
cooperation with Drs Niall Keenan and Anthony Chow, as part of the Heart
Partners Group, and with several others for specialist invasive care. To keep up
to date he regularly attend conferences, read many journal articles, and is one
of the most regular attendees and contributors at the Wellington Hospital
Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, both for general cardiology and for
arrhythmias.

To offer a truly patient-orientated approach, he has a professional email address (anthony.nathan@spirehealthcare.com) where patients can contact him directly with their queries, bypassing the necessity to go through intermediaries. In addition, with the rapid rise in the use of smart technology—especially patient-activated ECG recording such as smartwatches and Alivecor Kardia devices—his patients can directly send him ECG traces of suspected rhythm disorders, together with their current symptoms, for rapid interpretation and further management.
