Mr Khan is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and clinical director for ophthalmology working in the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh and honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. His specialist interests are high volume cataract surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery and diabetic eye disease. He is also the lead clinician for cataract surgery in NHS Lothian.
He completed his ophthalmic specialist training in Edinburgh with advanced vitreo-retinal training in Edinburgh and in the renowned Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre. He performs all types of vitreo-retinal surgery including surgery for epiretinal membranes, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments and complications following cataract surgery.
As lead clinician for cataract surgery, Mr Khan is at the forefront of progression to high volume cataract surgery within the NHS as well as leading on the theatre users group updating and modernising the equipment in ophthalmic theatres across the Lothians. He tailors the intra ocular lens implant choice for the individual, offering premium and toric lens options depending on personal preferences.
Mr Khan takes an active role in postgraduate education having been educational supervisor and college tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for many years. For his first 8 years as a consultant, over 70% of all first year trainee ophthalmologists in Edinburgh were placed with him to learn cataract surgery, demonstrating not only his ability in cataract surgery but also his enthusiasm and passion for teaching. He now takes on the leadership role as Clinical Director for Ophthalmology.
Outside of medicine Mr Khan has a busy family life and has taken up youth football coaching, which is more work than he anticipated!
