Dr Arun Shankar

Dr Arun Shankar is a dedicated Consultant Gastroenterologist and Consultant Hepatologist committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care. With extensive expertise in digestive and liver health, Dr Shankar works closely with patients to thoroughly evaluate, diagnose, and manage a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatic conditions. He prioritises clear communication and shared decision-making, ensuring patients feel fully informed, comfortable, and supported throughout their care journey.

His clinical focus encompasses both general gastroenterology and specialist hepatology. Dr Shankar has a particular interest in metabolic and alcohol-related liver conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis, and advanced chronic liver disease. He also provides specialised care in liver transplantation management, hepatitis C screening and therapy, and non-invasive liver fibrosis assessments. Additionally, he offers detailed consultations for patients presenting with broader gastrointestinal symptoms and complex liver disorders.

Dr Shankar completed his medical training at Newcastle University, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a Bachelor of Medical Science (B.Med.Sci). He further deepened his specialist expertise through postgraduate research in liver injury, earning a Master's Degree from Homerton College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and maintains professional memberships with several leading bodies, including the British Society of Gastroenterology, the British Association for the Study of the Liver, and the European Association for the Study of the Liver.

In addition to his direct clinical work, Dr Shankar plays a vital role in medical leadership and education, serving as a Director of Medical Education. He remains actively engaged in clinical research and the supervision of medical trainees, ensuring that standards of patient safety and modern, evidence-based medical practice are continuously advanced.
