Mr Ankur Barua is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery, dry eye, keratoconus, corneal transplant and refractive eye surgery. He practices privately at the Midland Eye Clinic.
In 2019, an opportunity arose to move to the regional centre as a substantive corneal consultant in Birmingham Midland Eye Centre, where he is now. Since moving to the new post, he is the first corneal consultant in the region to offer DMEK surgery (a form of corneal transplant) and has run a national training course for this. He has examined in the BMEC Oculus Course, has helped initiate MDT clinics for complex cases, and is the Designated Individual for the Human Tissue Authority Licence at BMEC.
Mr Barua qualified from Manchester Medical School, undertook a double honours ophthalmology clerkship in Harvard Medical School and Foundation Training in South Manchester, pursuing his interest in ophthalmology with a 7-year specialist training in the North West Deanery. Whilst training, he completed his MA in Law (Medical Law and Ethics). His interest in the anterior segment led to two periods of sub-specialist training in both Cornea and Glaucoma. After completion of CCT, he completed an advanced fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Corneoplastics Unit, QVH, East Grinstead. Following a locum cornea-glaucoma consultant post at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, he moved to the Midlands to take over the corneal service as the substantive lead in Coventry. Working across two sites, UHCW and St Cross Rugby, he carried out complex anterior segment surgery including corneal grafting, keratoconus treatment and high-risk cataract surgery.
Whilst at Coventry, he took on roles of the undergraduate tutor at Warwick Medical School and honorary consultant at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Mr Barua led in developing and introducing the keratoconus pathway and lubricant protocol into Coventry and Warwickshire, which remains since his departure. He was nominated 2 years in a row (2017 and 2018) for the Compassion in Care segment of the Outstanding Service and Care Awards at UHCW. He was also nominated Trainer of the Year 2017 within the Deanery.
Mr Barua has multiple peer-reviewed publications, authored a book chapter on paediatric keratoconus, run an instructional course at ESCRS and is heavily involved in teaching for medical students, ophthalmology trainees, and optometrists. This includes running wet labs along with regional teaching sessions. He has taken part in well-received symposia and education seminars and is chairing several sessions at the 2020 RCOphth Congress.
He has numerous posters and talks for both international and national meetings and has won prizes. His passion for ophthalmology is reflected in his dedication to patient care, and he has been involved in charity work in developing countries.

Following cataract surgery on my right eye in July 2023, I was diagnosed with Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy in both eyes and was referred to Mr. Barua in April 2024. Mr. Barua explained in detail the treatment options and we agreed on a treatment plan starting with a cornea transplant operation (DMEK corneal graft) on the right eye in July 2024. Following successful surgery on the right eye, I had combined cataract and DMEK surgery on the left eye in February 2025. Before the first operation I was very nervous, but the operation went so well that I was a lot less apprehensive when having the second operation. My vision (with glasses) is now 20/20 and, at my latest appointment in February 2026, Mr. Barua confirmed that the grafts in both eyes are clear and healthy. Throughout the process, Mr. Barua was very professional, explained everything clearly and continually provided reassurance. The follow-up care has been excellent and the support team (Kate Gerrard and the various opticians I have seen) have been great.
I went to see Mr Barua for a laser eye surgery. I had been to see two other more well-known providers for consultations but this was the only consultation where I actually got to meet my surgeon and ask him questions directly. At my consultation Mr Barua was very thorough and knowledgeable and carefully explained all my options, as well as the pros and cons of each. I needed more time to decide whether to go ahead with surgery and Mr Barua was happy to let me take the time I needed, there was no hard sell or push to book in and he also offered me another consultation if I felt I needed it. His secretary Kate was also very helpful when I did have further questions and was happy to talk over various aspects of the procedure when I called back. I had my surgery done about 6 weeks later and I felt very safe in Mr Barua's hands and his team were great. The follow ups have been easy to schedule in and again the team have been very thorough. The healing and recovery have gone well without any issues and I am very glad I opted to have Mr Barua perform my surgery.
Professional, friendly and very positive. Put me at ease through his caring manner.
