About Mr Alex Nicholls
Mr Alex Nicholls was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in March 2019, with a specialist practice in hand and upper limb surgery across Winchester and Basingstoke.
He is experienced in all aspects of hand and upper limb surgery, with particular expertise in Dupuytren’s disease, trauma, reconstruction, and deformity correction. Dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care, Mr Nicholls is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), ensuring his practice remains aligned with the latest techniques and innovations.
Mr Nicholls graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2004 with dual degrees in Medical Science and Medicine. Following his early surgical training, he taught anatomy at Birmingham Medical School before completing his Orthopaedic and Surgical training in the Wessex Region. In 2017, he completed his Orthopaedic Training with an MSc in Trauma Surgery and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, FRCS (Tr&Orth).
To further his expertise, Mr Nicholls undertook prestigious international fellowships, including:
- The Kadoorie Senior Trauma Fellowship, Children’s Surgical Centre, Cambodia
- The Sydney & St Luke’s Hand Fellowship, Sydney Hospital – Hand & Microsurgery

- Travelling Fellowship, California, USA – with world-renowned surgeons Neil Jones, David Slutsky and Jeffrey Yao

After my steroid injection in my shoulder my pain and discomfort eased off for 4 weeks it is now hurting again after resting, I’ve been told that physio will help but I’ve been seeing physios for over 12 months for this problem this is why I was referred to the specialist as the physio wasn’t helping, il book back in with another physio and see how it goes,
Since the letter I wrote earlier all the staff were so very helpful and as for Mr Nichols he was just "The Best" Janet Dijkhuizen.

Nothing to do with the consultation but the invoicing system could have been explained better.ie after our first visit we received an invoice from the clinic which we paid promptly,approximately 2 weeks later we received a second invoice from Circle in Cheadle for the same appointment which we ignored thinking it was a duplication. We were not aware that hospital services were invoiced seperately until we had a follow up invoice from Circle again demanding payment. If the double invoicing system had been explained initially it would have saved us the embarrassment of not paying promptly.

On booking an initial appointment, patients receive a lengthy confirmation letter, written in which is the following information regarding injection fees: Injections administered by the consultant in clinic will incur two fees for both self pay and insured patients; one from the consultant for administering the injection(s), and a second fee from the clinic for the cost of the drugs and the hire of the treatment room. As previously mentioned Mr Nicholls has an excellent, professional but comforting manner. Explaining clearly the hematoma and how I should set my expectations!!!!
