About Mr Alex Nicholls

Mr Alex Nicholls was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in March 2019, with a specialist practice in hand and upper limb surgery across Winchester and Basingstoke.

He is experienced in all aspects of hand and upper limb surgery, with particular expertise in Dupuytren’s disease, trauma, reconstruction, and deformity correction. Dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care, Mr Nicholls is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), ensuring his practice remains aligned with the latest techniques and innovations.

Mr Nicholls graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2004 with dual degrees in Medical Science and Medicine. Following his early surgical training, he taught anatomy at Birmingham Medical School before completing his Orthopaedic and Surgical training in the Wessex Region. In 2017, he completed his Orthopaedic Training with an MSc in Trauma Surgery and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, FRCS (Tr&Orth).

To further his expertise, Mr Nicholls undertook prestigious international fellowships, including:

  • The Kadoorie Senior Trauma Fellowship, Children’s Surgical Centre, Cambodia
  • The Sydney & St Luke’s Hand Fellowship, Sydney Hospital – Hand & Microsurgery
  • The Australian Orthopaedic Association Upper Limb Fellowship, Sydney
  • Travelling Fellowship, California, USA – with world-renowned surgeons Neil Jones, David Slutsky and Jeffrey Yao

Mr Nicholls combines advanced surgical training with a patient-centred approach, aiming to deliver excellent outcomes for both routine and complex upper limb conditions.

I would have appreciated a hand out before hand explaining the post op care in particular. I had already bought a plastic arm cover for showering but tips like that might be helpful for other patients
