Mr Alastair Moses is a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in colorectal surgery, appointed to NHS Tayside and as a Clinical Teacher at University of Dundee Medical School in 2009. He works within the Emergency General Surgery Unit and Major Trauma Centre at Ninewells Hospital, where he manages both emergency and elective surgical conditions.
His elective surgical practice includes colorectal surgery for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, proctology for disorders affecting the anus and rectum, and a broad range of general surgical procedures including gallbladder removal, abdominal wall and groin hernia repair, excision biopsies, and skin lesion surgery. Mr Moses specialises in both open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical techniques and performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, including bowel screening colonoscopy.
Mr Moses graduated with Commendation from University of Glasgow Medical School in 1992. Following junior and senior surgical training posts, he joined the prestigious West of Scotland Junior Surgical Registrars’ Training Scheme in 1995. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh by examination and later undertook research at the University Department of Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he coordinated a clinical trial focused on reversing weight loss in cancer patients.
In 2001, he was awarded a National Training Number and entered the West of Scotland Higher Surgical Training Scheme in General Surgery. He completed subspecialty colorectal training at the Edinburgh Colorectal Unit under Professor Malcolm Dunlop before obtaining his Certificate of Completion of Training and entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in 2008. He subsequently pursued advanced laparoscopic surgery training with Miklos Kassai and Ahmad Nassar prior to his consultant appointment.
Mr Moses is a designated member of NHS Tayside multidisciplinary teams for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and abdominal wall hernia management. He also has a longstanding commitment to surgical education and training. He served as East of Scotland Training Programme Director for General Surgery from 2017 to 2023, participated in UK National Selection for Specialty Training in General and Vascular Surgery between 2018 and 2023, and was a member of the General Surgery Surgical Specialty Board at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 2021 to 2023. He continues to serve as an NHS Tayside Medical Appraiser.
