About Dr. Akshay Kapoor
Dr. Akshay Kapoor is a consultant paediatric gastroenterologist with over 15 years of experience, specialising in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He trained at esteemed institutions in India and Canada, graduating with honours from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, before completing his residency in Paediatrics at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, where he was awarded the best resident award.
Following his initial training, Dr. Kapoor pursued further specialisation in Gastroenterology, focusing on Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the renowned SickKids Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
Currently, Dr. Kapoor leads the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service in Sheffield, managing the care of over 350 patients from Sheffield and surrounding regions. His expertise lies in treating difficult-to-manage IBD, offering second opinions, and utilising newer therapies. He also regularly treats children with abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, coeliac disease, food allergies, and bleeding in stools.
Dr. Kapoor has authored over 35 peer-reviewed articles in international journals and co-authored the Textbook of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He is the Principal Investigator for several international trials and frequently lectures at national and international conferences.
A JAG certified endoscopist, Dr. Kapoor is skilled in Upper GI Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, foreign body removal, polypectomy, and variceal banding. He is actively involved in training and mentoring gastroenterology trainees and endoscopists at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he also serves as a clinical and educational supervisor.
Dr. Kapoor’s research contributions have earned him several prestigious awards, including the International Paediatric Transplant Association Award for Best Scientific Paper in 2012 and 2013, and the World Congress of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Award for Best Young Investigator in 2012. He has also received the Young Investigator Award in 2015 and 2019. He has also been awarded the Sheffield Star Award for his contribution to Gastrointestinal research.
