Dr Adam Burns

Dr Adam Burns is a highly dedicated Consultant in Acute Medicine who specialises in General (Internal) Medicine. He focuses on the initial assessment and treatment of adult medical patients presenting to hospital, ensuring they receive prompt and effective care during critical moments. His clinical practice is centred on managing acute medical admissions, working closely with emergency departments and same-day emergency care services to streamline patient pathways and deliver high-quality, reassuring care.

With a broad range of clinical interests, Dr Burns has developed particular expertise in the management of poisoning, drug toxicity, and substance misuse. He has contributed significantly to clinical standards by authoring trust guidelines for paracetamol poisoning and opiate substitution. Additionally, he utilises advanced clinical tools such as ultrasound and echocardiography to support precise and timely clinical decision-making at the bedside.

Dr Burns completed his medical education in Leeds, where he also undertook his acute care common stem and higher specialist training. Committed to advancing healthcare standards, he is a former Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership and Simulation Fellow, with a strong focus on human factors, patient safety, and technical skills simulation. Alongside his clinical duties, he holds prominent educational and leadership roles, serving as an Associate Dean for Quality with NHS England and leading undergraduate acute and critical care education.
