Just had 2 zoom calls with Alan Doherty that were arranged very promptly and he provided great information after reviewing my MRI & biopsy results

I hoped to get a real sense of competence and confidence from my consultant - and I got exactly that from Mr Alan Doherty. His support team were quick to respond whenever I approached them for something and were helpful and friendly. The only issue was that my MRI Scan results (from Cheynie Mews) seemed to fall into a black hole and there was a 2 week delay when there need not have been. Not sure on whose side the fault was.

In January 2024 a raised PSA level led to my GP suggesting I have an MRI scan, then followed the news that I had Prostate Cancer. As so often is the case, there were no symptoms whatsoever. So began my NHS cancer journey with regular PSA tests and an LATP biopsy, not under GA, which was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever experienced (I am 66 years old). This revealed cancer Gleason 3+3. My PSA levels continued to rise so I had another MRI in December 2025 which, I was told, showed no difference to the original. I wasn't comfortable with the diagnosis, did some research online and found a video on HIFU by The Focal Therapy Clinic. I had a call with Raj Nigam and booked an LATP biopsy in April 2026 at the Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford under GA. There were actually two lesions, one on each side of the prostate, cancer Gleason 4+3, so far more serious. After a PSMA scan showed no cancer outside the prostate Mr Nigam was able to carry out HIFU in May 2026 also at Mount Alvernia Hospital. I cannot recommend Mr Nigam and the team at MA highly enough, the care I received was excellent and I am still sending PSA results to him for monitoring of my condition. I'm happy to say that my PSA has dropped to the expected level so great news. Like many people who have paid into the NHS for many years, I feel slightly resentful that I have to 'go privately'. All I will say is that 'it is what it is' and if you are considering this route and you can afford it, please don't hesitate. Best wishes, Mark

The initial Zoom consultation, which was for a 2nd opinion, was very precise in reviewing the prognosis and treatment plan. Whilst wanting to discuss potential treatment options the consultant advised that there was only one recommended treatment based on my scans. The consultant advised that my NHS biopsy was not telling the full story when cross checked with the MRI scan. His recommendation was a nerve sparing rarp prostatectomy sooner rather than later. A 2nd face to face consultation detailed why this was the recommendation and the structure of the surgery which was then scheduled 2 weeks later. Following a successful procedure the histology proved the consultant was correct in his diagnosis in that the cancer was worse than the NHS biopsy and prognosis reports. In fact the cancer was just breaking out and additional bladder work was required showing the cancer was really caught just in time before spread. The knowledge and skill of the surgeon was key to providing the right advice and surgical outcome. The first PSA was 0.01 but due to the breakout the possibilities of any future reoccurrence remained. Surgical recovery has gone to plan with no incontinence issues and going positive direction on ED recovery.

The hospital looked very tired, carpets need a good clean. Whilst we were waiting a technician was working in the ceiling moving tiles and leaving dust and debris everywhere. My partner ended up dusting the chairs.

I have received two HIFU procedures for bilateral prostate cancer in 2025. My one year multi parametric MRI shows no further lesions in prostate or adjacent tissue or bone and therefore an excellent outcome. I chose HIFU to minimise other damage and allow for possible future HIFU treatments if there is a recurrence that option may not be available with other treatments like radiotherapy where second rounds of treatment have fewer options. Although it seems HIFU might be a viable solution if cancer returns after radiotherapy. The decision paths through prostate cancer treatment are often simplified to surgery, or radiotheraphy with steroids. There are many other options with some helpful resources from cancer charities to explain them, however the best help by far is a discussion with a highly experienced specialist. I have been lucky enough to have an excellent specialist and first rate treatment by the Focal team.

My experience was excellent. The communication was good as I was kept informed about the procedure step by step and even after the procedure. There were no surprises or unexpected.
