Dr Richard Shew

Dr Richard Shew is a highly qualified Consultant Gastroenterologist and Infectious Diseases Specialist who provides comprehensive care for patients with digestive and liver disorders. With a dual specialisation that uniquely positions him to manage complex cases, Dr Shew focuses on general gastroenterology, endoscopic procedures, and the management of viral hepatitis and other infectious conditions. He is dedicated to delivering patient-centred, reassuring care, ensuring that individuals undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures feel fully supported throughout their medical journey.

Dr Shew completed his medical degree at Auckland University in 1985. Following his initial graduation, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, specialising in Infectious Diseases and Sexual Health. He subsequently undertook advanced training in Gastroenterology within New South Wales, completing his final Registrar training post at a major teaching hospital in Sydney, where he focused extensively on Hepatology and liver transplantation. Dr Shew is accredited by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Training. He maintains active memberships with several professional bodies, including the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, the Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases, the Australian College of Sexual Health Physicians, and the Australian Chinese Medical Association.

In his clinical practice, Dr Shew has a strong interest in general gastroenterology, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, and the treatment of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV infections. His extensive expertise is complemented by his contributions to medical research, having published several academic papers on topics such as HIV infection in women, malaria, and sexual abuse. Beyond his clinical work, Dr Shew is an avid collector and exhibitor of rare and exotic succulent and cacti plants, reflecting his diverse interests and approachable nature.
