Dr Eric Wegman

Associate Professor (Adjunct) Dr Eric Wegman is an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist with a longstanding commitment to digestive health, gastrointestinal physiology and the early detection of gastrointestinal disease. His specialist interests include inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer screening and surveillance, gastro-oesophageal disorders, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

His clinical work is informed by an extensive academic background in gastrointestinal physiology, with particular emphasis on understanding the functional mechanisms underlying digestive disorders. Combining specialist medical assessment with diagnostic endoscopy, he focuses on identifying gastrointestinal conditions accurately and developing appropriate long-term management strategies.

Dr Wegman founded Newland Street Specialist Centre in Bondi Junction in 1992, establishing a multidisciplinary facility dedicated to specialist medical consultation and gastrointestinal investigation.

He remains the Centre's proprietor and Chief Executive Officer, overseeing its continued development and commitment to specialist patient care. The facility incorporates the Sydney Clinic for Gastrointestinal Diseases and has expanded its services through collaboration with other medical specialties.

Dr Wegman has made significant contributions to gastrointestinal research and medical education. He previously lectured in gastrointestinal physiology at the University of Sydney and served as an independent assessor for National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) scholarship applications.

His research has appeared in journals including Gut, The American Journal of Physiology, The Journal of Membrane Biology and The Medical Journal of Australia. He has also contributed chapters to medical textbooks used internationally. His academic achievements include research scholarship support from the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and grants from the Ramacciotti Foundation and Bushell Foundation.

Dr Wegman's approach to gastroenterology combines clinical experience, physiological understanding and an emphasis on preventive healthcare. He considers the underlying mechanisms of digestive symptoms alongside appropriate diagnostic investigations, aiming to distinguish functional disorders from conditions requiring specific medical or endoscopic treatment.
