Dr van der Griend completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales. He then undertook extensive postgraduate specialist training in Sydney and the United Kingdom, during which he was awarded the prestigious Organon Prize for Excellence in Specialty Examination. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he serves as a Medical Adviser to a leading medical indemnity organisation and is actively involved in mentoring and training medical and midwifery students.

In his obstetric practice, Dr van der Griend manages both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, including multiple births such as twins, triplets, and quadruplets.
