Dr Kate Burbury

Dr Kate Burbury is a highly accomplished Consultant Haematologist and Associate Professor who is dedicated to providing exceptional care for patients with blood disorders. With a focus on clinical excellence and patient-centred care, she serves in key leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Director of Digital and Healthcare Innovations. Dr Burbury is widely recognised for her expertise in managing complex haematological conditions, combining her clinical practice with a strong commitment to improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Her primary clinical and research interests lie in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Additionally, Dr Burbury is a leading specialist in haemostasis and thrombosis, particularly focusing on cancer-associated thromboembolism and the implementation of targeted thromboprophylaxis. She is also highly regarded for her work in peri-operative and peri-procedural optimisation, which includes prehabilitation strategies designed to support patients undergoing major cancer surgeries. Through her focus on digital health, she actively works to integrate innovative technology into routine clinical practice to enhance supportive care.

Dr Burbury began her medical journey at the University of Tasmania, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours in 1994. She was subsequently awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, completing her Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) at Oxford University in 1999. To further her specialist expertise, she undertook extensive postgraduate training and fellowships in haematology both in the United Kingdom and Australia. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), reflecting her dual expertise in clinical care and laboratory medicine.
