Dr John Yaxley

Dr John Yaxley is a highly regarded Urologist and Urological Surgeon who has dedicated his career to providing exceptional care to patients. He has a highly specialised clinical focus on the investigation, diagnosis, and comprehensive management of prostate cancer, as well as bladder malignancies. Known for his reassuring and patient-centred approach, Dr Yaxley is committed to utilising advanced surgical techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes while prioritising his patients' quality of life.

Dr Yaxley completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland in 1986. Following his initial medical training, he undertook specialist training in urology and was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1995. He subsequently completed post-fellowship specialist training in uro-oncology at a premier urology institute in the United Kingdom. Dr Yaxley is a past Chairman of the Northern Section of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare, he was awarded the Surgeon General John White Medal in 2010. He also holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland and serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases.

As an expert in minimally invasive and advanced surgical procedures, Dr Yaxley has extensive experience in performing radical prostatectomies, including robot-assisted laparoscopic techniques and nerve-sparing procedures designed to preserve post-operative potency. He was a pioneer in introducing prostate brachytherapy to Queensland and is highly skilled in emerging focal therapies, such as the NanoKnife irreversible electroporation technique, which minimises the risk of incontinence and impotence. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr Yaxley is actively involved in clinical research and academic teaching, helping to train the next generation of urological specialists and contributing numerous peer-reviewed publications to international medical literature.
