Mr. James Tunggal is a highly experienced and skilled orthopaedic surgeon with a sub-specialty in conditions affecting the knee, shoulder, and hip. His expertise encompasses sports orthopaedics, joint replacement, and trauma surgery. With over 17 years of operative experience and extensive training in Australia, Norway, and Canada, Mr. Tunggal is recognised for his innovative approach and unwavering dedication to patient care.
Mr. Tunggal’s primary focus is on knee and shoulder sports orthopaedics, collaborating closely with numerous sports physiotherapists and allied health professionals to provide optimal and timely care to athletes affiliated with various amateur and professional sporting clubs on the Sunshine Coast.
As an ardent advocate and proficient user of advanced surgical technology, Mr. Tunggal integrates custom-made instruments with navigation to deliver personalised and patient-specific total knee replacements. He is also an expert in robotic-assisted partial knee replacements, combining precision and innovation to achieve optimal outcomes.
For the past decade, Mr. Tunggal has dedicated his expertise to caring for patients across the Sunshine Coast, including Noosa Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital, the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, and his practice in Birtinya.
Mr. Tunggal remains steadfastly committed to education and mentorship. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as the Director of Training for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. In this capacity, he guides advanced orthopaedic trainees of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
Mr. Tunggal obtained his medical degree from the University of New South Wales and completed his advanced training in orthopaedic surgery through the Sydney Northside Orthopaedic Training Programme in 2008. Subsequently, he gained experience on the Sunshine Coast and pursued an advanced clinical fellowship in knee and shoulder arthroscopy at Ullevål University Hospital and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre in Norway. His training continued with a fellowship in hip and knee arthroplasty and major pelvic and lower limb trauma at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada.
In 2009, Mr. Tunggal relocated permanently to the Sunshine Coast and was appointed as a staff specialist at Nambour General Hospital and subsequently at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.
