Dr James Burrell

Dr James Burrell is a highly accomplished Consultant Neurologist and Professor of Cognitive Neurology who specialises in diagnosing and managing a wide range of neurological conditions. With a primary focus on cognitive and behavioural neurology, he is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centred care. Dr Burrell has a particular interest in cognitive disorders, including young onset dementia and atypical dementias, and is actively involved in clinical research aimed at improving diagnostic and prognostic markers for these conditions. His clinical expertise also extends to general neurology, where he manages common and complex disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease.

In addition to his work in cognitive neurology, Dr Burrell is a skilled Clinical Neurophysiologist. He personally performs specialised diagnostic procedures, including nerve conduction studies and electromyography, to investigate neuromuscular conditions. This expertise allows him to evaluate symptoms such as numbness, tingling, back pain, and peripheral neuropathy, often enabling patients to receive a comprehensive assessment and diagnostic testing during a single consultation. Dr Burrell graduated with a combined Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) from the University of New South Wales in 2000. He completed his basic physician training and advanced training in neurology at several leading teaching hospitals in Sydney. In 2008, he completed a specialised fellowship in neuromuscular disease and neurophysiology, and in the same year, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr Burrell also holds a PhD focusing on the clinical, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging characteristics of dementias, and he continues to contribute to the medical community as an educator, mentor, and active researcher.
