Dr Comus Whalan

Dr Comus Whalan is a highly qualified Consultant General Surgeon who provides comprehensive surgical care with a patient-centred approach. He believes that effective communication is the cornerstone of excellent medical care, ensuring that patients are fully informed about their conditions and the various treatment pathways available to them. Rather than rushing into decisions, Dr Whalan encourages his patients to carefully consider their options and discuss them with family and friends, ensuring they feel comfortable and supported throughout their healthcare journey.

Dr Whalan completed his medical degree, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) from Flinders University in 1989. He undertook his internship and initial surgical training at a major teaching hospital in Adelaide, subsequently completing his advanced training in General Surgery across South Australia and Queensland in 2004. In addition to his clinical training, he dedicated four years to full-time medical research, earning a postgraduate Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of Adelaide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), reflecting his commitment to the highest standards of surgical practice.

As a General Surgeon, Dr Whalan maintains a broad interest in abdominal surgery and a wide range of general surgical procedures. He has developed a particular interest in the emerging sub-speciality of abdominal wall reconstruction, regularly attending advanced courses and conferences to stay at the forefront of complex hernia repairs. His clinical practice encompasses diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, and bowel resections. Additionally, Dr Whalan performs minor surgical procedures, including treatments for skin cancers, haemorrhoids, carpal tunnel syndrome, and vasectomies.
