Dr Amerasinghe completed his initial medical training in Sri Lanka, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1995. He commenced his specialist training in dermatology in 2004 and successfully completed his Doctor of Medicine in Dermatology in 2008. Following further clinical work in New Zealand, he relocated to Australia, where he undertook advanced training across several major tertiary hospitals in Melbourne. In 2014, he obtained his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, cementing his status as a fully accredited Specialist in the field.
