Dr Tobenna Oputa

Dr Tobenna Oputa is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports and reconstructive knee surgery. His practice focuses particularly on sports-related knee injuries and knee problems affecting younger and active individuals. His expertise includes ACL reconstruction and revision ACL surgery, meniscal repair and preservation, complex ligament reconstruction, patellofemoral instability and dislocation, cartilage preservation surgery and knee realignment surgery.

Dr Oputa graduated with an MB ChB from the University of Leeds in 2012, having also completed a BSc (Hons). He undertook specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in the North West of England and was awarded FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 2022. Following specialist training, he completed advanced fellowship training at Wrightington Hospital and Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds, gaining experience across sports and complex reconstructive knee surgery.

His clinical practice also encompasses knee arthroscopy, cartilage repair and knee joint injections. His fellowship training included experience in ACL and revision ACL surgery, meniscal repair, complex ligament injuries, kneecap instability, cartilage injuries and knee realignment surgery.

Dr Oputa is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Surgery and Medicine and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has lectured on knee surgery and sports injuries. He has published more than 20 scientific papers, contributed to specialist academic texts and authored a book chapter on ACL injuries in female athletes. He is also recognised as a trainer by the GMC.

His professional memberships include the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association and the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.
