Mr Tobi Oputa

Mr Tobi Oputa is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports knee injuries, ligament reconstruction and knee preservation surgery. His practice focuses on the treatment of ACL injuries, meniscal tears, kneecap instability, cartilage injuries and complex knee ligament injuries. He also offers treatment for knee arthritis, including joint preservation surgery and knee replacement where appropriate.

Mr Oputa provides a modern, patient-centred approach to knee surgery, treating patients of all ages and activity levels, from recreational athletes to those participating in competitive sport. He uses modern surgical techniques, including keyhole surgery, ligament reconstruction and cartilage restoration, with an emphasis on achieving the best possible results for each patient. His aim is to restore knee function, preserve the natural joint wherever possible and help patients return to the activities they enjoy.

Sport has always been a central part of Mr Oputa’s life and remains an important part of his daily routine. He previously played representative rugby and competed in athletics at the British Universities Championships on multiple occasions. Today, he continues to lead an active sporting lifestyle, training most days, regularly playing football and hockey, running and competing in HYROX events, triathlons and other fitness challenges. He also coaches a junior rugby team and is an Ambassador for Power Up to Play, a charity programme focused on injury prevention in youth sports.

His lifelong involvement in sport and personal experience of sporting injuries give him an understanding of the physical and psychological challenges of injury and rehabilitation, and the importance of returning to the activities that matter to his patients. This perspective is reflected in his approach to knee surgery, with a focus on restoring function and helping patients return confidently to the sports and activities they enjoy.

Mr Oputa graduated from the University of Leeds in 2012 and undertook his postgraduate surgical training in the North West of England, including eight years of specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2022.

Following his specialist training, Mr Oputa undertook three advanced knee surgery fellowships, including at the renowned Wrightington Hospital, further developing his expertise in sports knee surgery, ligament reconstruction, meniscal preservation, cartilage restoration and the treatment of knee injuries in children and young athletes.

He currently works as an NHS Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and provides private consultations and surgery at The Highfield Hospital in Rochdale.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Oputa is actively involved in research, teaching and surgical education. He has contributed to more than 20 scientific publications and authored a book chapter on ACL injuries in female athletes. He also holds an academic appointment as Senior Lecturer in Sports Surgery at the University of Greater Manchester.

Mr Oputa believes strongly in taking the time to listen to patients, understand their goals and explain their condition and treatment options clearly. Surgery is not always the answer, and he works closely with physiotherapists to ensure patients receive appropriate rehabilitation and non-surgical treatment wherever possible. When surgery is required, his approach is to provide evidence-based, individualised care focused on restoring function and helping patients return to an active lifestyle.
