About Dr Sothinathan Gurunathan

Dr Sothinathan Gurunathan is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, specialising in advanced cardiovascular imaging, valvular heart disease, heart failure, and cardio-oncology. He is the clinical lead for cardio-oncology, which focuses on protecting and monitoring the heart health of patients undergoing cancer treatment.

With broad expertise in general cardiology, Dr Gurunathan has particular interest in complex echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. His work ensures accurate diagnosis and tailored management of both common and complex cardiac conditions.

Dr Gurunathan completed his PhD at Imperial College London, focusing on advanced cardiovascular imaging in coronary artery disease and heart failure. His research, which also explored the role of carotid ultrasound in improving cardiovascular risk assessment, was recognised with several academic awards. His subspecialty training took place at leading London institutions including St George’s Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, and Barts Heart Centre. Prior to this, he undertook a prestigious heart failure fellowship under the mentorship of Professor John Cleland, an internationally renowned authority in the field.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Gurunathan is committed to medical education. He serves as both educational and clinical supervisor for trainee doctors, teaches medical students from St George’s Medical School and the University of Southampton, and regularly delivers educational sessions for cardiology, oncology and primary care colleagues.

More recently, he was awarded Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) for his contributions to the field of cardiology.
