Mr Soon Wai Ch'ng

Mr Ch’ng is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), specialising in medical and vitreoretinal surgery. He is the Clinical Director (Head of Department) and a former Lead Clinician for the Emergency Department. In his leadership role, he has driven digital innovation, including AI-supported triage and electronic referral systems to improve efficiency, safety, and patient care. He graduated from the University of Liverpool and completed his ophthalmology training in 2016, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). His fellowship training includes advanced vitreoretinal surgery at BMEC and clinical research at the Manchester Vision Regeneration Lab and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, where he contributed to developments in retinal imaging, laser therapy, retinal prostheses, and surgical technology. He also holds an MBA from the University of Liverpool and a Distinction in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (PgDipCRS) from Ulster University.

Mr Ch’ng is active in education and research, having trained vitreoretinal surgeons who now practise internationally. He is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor, an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a member of its Surgical Skills Faculty. He has contributed to multiple clinical trials, published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, and regularly speaks at academic meetings. He is also a Medical Trustee of the Roper-Hall Eye Foundation, supporting research and innovation in ophthalmology.
